Among small, relatively inexpensive point and shoots, Canon, Panasonic and Sony GENERALLY have the best reputation. Nikon, Olympus, Fuji and Pentax GENERALLY are on the next level. However, within each brand the camera models vary in quality, so you can't assume that all models from the same producer are equal in quality.

I, too, was drawn too the 28-560mm zoom range of the Canon. However, I went to local store and handled it and took some pictures. Having looked at them on screen later, and then having seen the FZ28's pictures, I think the FZ28's image quality is better. Less noise, less distortion, and less purple fringing. What I do like about the S10 IS, besides the zoom range, is the hotshoe for external flashes. You might be happy...

Image quality will be moot if the camera is out of focus. And focus performance is an area where the inexpensive cameras can be at odds. Not just brand-to-brand, but also model-to-model within the same brand. So I would suggest checking reviews for specific models instead of relying on lens name reputation. Kelly Cook

Climber22, You are correct about the G10. In fact, its pixel density falls between the two cameras you listed. Pixel density is one way to look at how crowded an image sensor is. Generally, lower pixel density will generate a better image. For example, the G10's is 34 MP/CM^2, while an SLR with the same MP rating, the Canon EOS 50D, has a density of 4.5 MP/CM^2. That said, it is not the only determining factor in image quality- but it...

My Casio EX-Z750, bought in September 2005, is still in regular use, as it goes easily in a breast pocket, and lives, ready to shoot, in my everyday vehicle. It's quite a solid little machine. It has quite extensive manual control. I generally use it in a quasi-aperture priority mode. I note that that the mechanical rotary knob selecting modes including manual control has disappeared from all the successor models along with the manual...

With a vantage point like the one in the videos, the 55-250 should be fine. I live near Andrews AFB, and every year, the Blue Angels fly over my street. See my posts at: 2008 Joint Service Open House Air Show So, anything happen over in your neighborhood today?

I haven't seen any reviews of the T700 yet. That's a lot of pixels for a tiny sensor though (and that's not always a good thing). ;-) Steve's reviewed the T200 and it looks like it did quite well for this type of camera. See the review conclusion for more info on how it stacks up. It's an 8MP model with a bit better zoom range. It was added to...

Hi all, I'm hoping to spend under $150 (if I include web shopping) on a new point-and-shoot, but might spend $200. My main criterion is overall image quality. (I don't know if saying this is necessary on this forum, but please hold the sarcasm--there ARE other criteria one might consider.) Assuming all other things are equal among three or four hypothetical point and shoots--say, a ...

I've mastered point-and-shoots, and finally convinced my parents to buy me a DSLR. This isn't just a hobby, I'm planning to pursue photojournalism. Anyway I've done my research&narrowed down my choices (because i have a strict budget) to either the Canon XTi, the Canon XS100D, the Nikon D40, or the Sony A200. I'd go into a Best Buy or Circuit City to actually try out each camera & see ...

Hi, Articles by David Pogue of the NY Times have me looking only for cameras with sensors larger than 1/2.5. One fairly standard size larger than that is 1/1.8, but it seems they are quite rare, especially under $200, which is what I'm hoping to spend. Assuming that my main criterion is image quality, is it worth it for me to keep searching for a camera with a sensor larger than...

I've just started shopping around for a new point and shoot, and it seems like some good ones don't support SD cards, but rather XD cards. I found that weird because I thought SD was the more universlly accepted kind. Am I wrong? Is one better than the other? Is the new standard in cameras to support multiple types of storage? Thanks!

I'm looking into buying the SX10 as an early Christmas present for myself and I was wondering what you're thoughts on this camera is? or you're suggestions for another camera, I'm looking into becoming a photographer, and I'm still learning, but lots of zoom, picture quality and speed are probably my biggest concerns! Please help! TIA, Amber

hello everyone. back in the film slr days, things were simpler. you'd more or less prefer one brand for a few personal reasons and you'd often marry it for life and forget about it. switching films was easy, so a part of your image quality could be defined on a day-by-day basis. now things are trickier and new technology involves more variables than before. so I mean for this post to...

I have a SONY W50 and a Canon S3 IS. The sony takes crap pictures. Even outside more than half are blurry. The canon take much better pictures, but I hate taking it when I go mountain biking or hiking and it's heavier to carry hiking. I take mostly landscape and family pictures, but I have an interest in improving my photography skills. I am willing to spend a little bit of money to get a ...

Hi to Steve and all I am looking for a new wide angle camera that is easy to carry and not too large. My girlfriend and I go quite often into the mountains and our film camera and lenses are just a little too big and impractical. We have quite allot of pictures we have taken on the wall at home and most on average are 11x14 or 16x20 so I would like something with good picture quality at ...

With Christmas around the corner we're looking at the Kodak EasyShare C713 ($80) for our 12-year old daughter, I know this is a good entry-level camera but is there anything else compatible I should be looking at for around the same price range from Kodak, or other companies such as Canon? Thanks!, Wesley

Ok this is driving me crazy. I have studied and studied. It has come down to the Nikon d80 and Canon XSI. I was VERY close to buying the SonyA300 today with 2 lens came to about 700 after taxes but decided against it because the sensor. My budget is around 800 with one lens. I will be getting, with either camera, 70-300 lens . Now I am into Airshows/avaition. I can get pretty close by the ...

I need a recommendation for a decent point and shoot for my girlfriend. I have a Fuji S9600 myself and an old Olympus D580 Zoom that work just fine, but the D580 isn't great indoors, in low light. She would like something that will fit in a handbag that performs well in low light or at night. Is this a big ask? What would you guys recommend? Last edited on Thu Nov 13th, 2008 03:54 pm by...

Hello there, I hope that I posted in the right section. I finally bought my first DSLR camera, a Sony Alpha 350 with twin lens kit. I also bought a new tripod and new memory card reader. I would like to seek opinions on what accessories I shall get first before getting additional lens or flash. Thanks.

I am looking to pick up a second camera for carrying around when situations prohibit/discourage carrying my Canon SLR + lenses. I love my SLR, and shoot a ton with it, but after cracking the LCD last year while backcountry skiing, I told myself I would get something that could be carried more safely and easily. I accept that a compact will never rival my SLR in image quality- but I want ...

Hi there, my daughter (11 years) enjoys taking photos and used so far: - analog/film snapshot camera (fixfocus) - Olympus C770 UZ - Pentax DL2 dSLR She's about to develop a bigger interest in photography with a strong focus on just taking pictures, finding interesting objects, locations, etc. I had some discussions with her and this is what we came up with: - a rather small, ...
