Very inconsistent upload speed

I think you have a cable modem, as this is the only device I can think of to timed out at hop 1. Turn off power to the modem for 15 mins. And then turn it on. Let the modem reset itself and download any firmware upgrade your ISP may be sending over the line.

I do have a cable modem, and only they can download and install firmware for it,I think I'm using the latest one since the MTU is now 1500, it used to be 1432.

No, sir -- not a pitch at all. Just reporting some facts that were gained by my personal experience with a cable modem that does a whole lot more than what we're used to. I don't pretend to know all there is to know about cable modems -- but I have 12 years of Cox Internet service, and experience with DOCSIS 1, 2 , and now 3. As I said before, replacing ANY earlier cable modem with a DOCSIS 3 will bring MUCH higher speeds --...

Router is slower than 100Mbps
Published (2009-11-27 05:55:00)
Hi! My ISP changed my net speed to 120M/10M, 30M/5M guaranteed. I've used their speed-o-meter, and it showed only 28M/7M. I called them, and eventually we've figured out, that my router causes the problem. When I connected my notebook to the modem directly, I'm getting the max 120M/10M speed. So, I've upgraded my router's firmware, still no change. My router is an Edimax BR 6104K, and it supposed to have a 100M...

I just find it hard to believe that the modem givse your more speed then the config file sets you at. I mean I could see this modem causing a ton of headaches at the cable head end. I was under the impression that the channel bonding had to be put in place by the cable co. Not the modem doing it. You learn something new everyday.

I have Charters 60meg and I use the SB6120. The modem works flawlessly. Firmware is easy to update. I've been getting 60-67megabit steady.
Any other questions?

If you test out with another comp and modem, and get a similar result, then problem is probably along the line to your ISP's central office.
