Help me get excited about Croatia
Published (2009-12-15 17:54:00)
Okay... how could I not be excited about Croatia when so many of my most-admired Slow Travelers are raving about it! (Wonderful photo, by the way, Jane.) Maybe we should just scrap the plan to spend a few weeks in Tuscany and stay longer in Croatia. Seriously... I've had a major attitude adjustment. This will be a fun project to work on over the holidays. Kathy

we have not been to Turkey so I can't offer any advice, but I wanted to mention that I watched Rudy Maxa's show (a 2008 rerun) about the Turquoise Coast yesterday and was mesmorized by the scenery and the ruins. It was one of his best shows, I thought. He focuses on a gullet cruise, a "blue cruise." Watch it if you can. It sure got me interested in seriously pursuing a trip to Turkey. Linda

Wow! Even more resources to explore. Thanks, Chiocciola for the link to your blog and David's trip report. Somehow I overlooked those. Planning for me is at least half the fun, and thanks to you all for providing me so much material to explore. Jeanne

Kathy, I love Tuscany, but I do think that if you decide to go to Croatia, you should plan to spend at least a couple of weeks there, and longer if possible -- we spent 4 weeks and loved every place we went. We started inland in Zagreb, and I'm glad we did -- as Jane says, the non-coastal areas have a different feeling than the Dalmatian coast, which was so influenced by Venice over the course of several hundred years. In addition to...

Yes, every town has internet cafes, and extremely reasonably priced, too. None of our rentals had wifi, though. I highly recommend Plitivice Park also - gorgeous. Zagreb has a very old world, Eastern European feeling to it, and the night time scene was hopping.

The problem with lists like this is that we all have different perspectives. We enjoyed the gorge and just blew off the vendors. After our "walk" we visited one of the restaurant at river level at the entrance and enjoyed that as well. Good luck with you planning.

We did not have any problems with the language barrier. We found that like the other countries we have visited, most of the people we interacted with spoke at least some English. France seemed to have the fewest English speakers, but even there with our few basic words, we did fine. The Ice Man was really amazing. And Bolzano was such a interesting mix of languages and cultures. I would like to go back for more than just a day trip.

Public transportation in Prague is great! The three Metro lines are easy to navigate and trolleys are lots of fun. You can buy passes for as little as 20 minutes of travel, up to several days, then just validate the ticket once and be ready to show it in spot checks after that. If you like architecture, just walking the central areas on both sides of the river is such a treat.

Hi wannatravel - one place to start gathering ideas is from our Slow Travel trip reports. They will give you a taste of what others have experienced. And if you use the "Find" button at the top of the page and enter "Turkey", you will find several previous threads that have even more information. Happy planning -- Turkey is on my "some day" list, too. Judy

Hi Kathy, and Happy Holidays. Well, with all the fabulous places to go in this world, it would be silly to go to a place you're not excited about! I've done my best on this with my trip report, with its information and its reflections, which you've probably seen. We were there for 2 1/2 weeks, but we were only in Dalmatia, and only on the coast - I'm not a Croatia expert by any means. Here's ...

Oh boy! Am I ever interested in the replies that you might get on this! Unfortunately, I can offer nothing to help, as we haven't done this yet. But I spent a lot of time checking into a Hurtigruten experience for Sept. Then decided we'd rather go in May, so its been pushed back to May 2011, so my research has no urgency. I will enjoy following this thread and hope that you will follow your ...

To answer your last question first: it is possible to take rental cars from Germany into the Czech Republic but some companies do not allow any of their cars to be taken and others restrict the makes of car you can take. It is essential to check before you book. Europcar has been one of the least restrictive in the past. In my opinion, the biggest problem with taking a car to Prague is parking ...

Sounds like a lovely trip you both had, Kathryn. I would LOVE to see the ICE MAN, so you've really piqued my interest. How did you find communicating - were there any language issues for you? I know that in so many of the European countries many people are conversant in more than one language, very often English.

Most definitely - you will be able to go into Amsterdam. I had about a 4 1/2 hour layover and was able to spend the morning in Amsterdam. You have even more time. I'd say you would have at least 5 hours in Amsterdam giving yourself 1 hour each way to get to and from the plane. Getting in to Amsterdam: It will take about 1 hour from touchdown to Centraal Station. Getting through Passport control...
