Will do! Btw, when I said businesses choosing whether to go all-smoking or all no-smoking, I meant restaurants and bars. I believe the law demanded that bigger premises set up non-smoking sections, while smaller premises must choose one way or the other. The restaurants and bars that I frequented in Barcelona were the smaller ones in the old town, which fall into the latter category. Look up Spain in this BBC article on the global picture of...

How long are you going to leave it? If you are worried, you could pay for a guarded lot. But it seems like a lot of people probably do this and as long as nothing is visible in the car...

The (anti) smoking laws are complicated here in Spain. I will attempt explain what is what. If a bar or a restaurant has less then 100 sq. metres then it is allowed to permit smoking in the area designated as public. If over this size then part of the area can be divided off and designated as smoking area and the rest non-smoking. Public and staff must not pass through the smoking area to enter toilets or kitchen. If the establishment is under...

Welcome to Slow Talk and to Slow Travel, Luvs2travel! You are considering a drive of circa 600 km. You may have to include an overnight stop. Train Madrid-Carcassonne means two connections, at Barcelona and Narbonne, a total travel time of circa 12 1/2 hours. Prices are not yet available for all segments but a a test using a January date shows the cost on Rail Europe of just above USD1,000. ...

quote: Have smoking laws reached Spain? Sort of. Sort of not. If I understood, instead of demanding that each business have a smoking section, the law demands that each business chooses whether the entire place allows smoking or not. That was my experience in the bars in Barcelona earlier in the year. Will be there in a couple of days and will let you know.

Why Spain ? Well...it has large cities like Barcelona...a most harmonious amalgam of the very old and the more contemporary. It also drips with a hip, coastal vibe...this band on the beach really cooked. I think this place has it all going on. March 2009

hi Patrick, I am hoping some of the locals chime in because my experience is limited - I spent a week in that area in early October 2006. The weather was great - sunny, not too hot, pretty much perfect. I would imagine that spring would be great too. Keep us posted on your developing plans!

Hotel Regina is 3-star hotel on Calle de Alcalá. The location was exceptional for us, as we were kind of halfway to any place we wished to walk to. One advice: At Regina stay away from any rooms whose number ends with 25; they open to a narrow interior court and are wall to wall with the elevator shaft. Otherwise, nothing to criticise: the staff was helpful, the breakfast generous, there is an...
