FYI People in the disucssion on Amazon regarding this boxset have reported getting partial refunds to keep the set rather than return it. One person reported a 20% refund and another 30%. They just sent an email to Amazon Support. I've sent an email myself and will see what happens. Since you have to do some work to rectify the glue problem, I think a partial refund is justified. To send them a message, you have to go to the help page. On...

Rhino lossless
Published (2009-12-06 17:30:00)
Important note: I don't know if it was just because I signed up, or a holiday sale or whatever, but I got an order this afternoon half off. I bought the Ellington and a new MJQ collection as Flac files, with a total list price of $75 for $38. That's not bad. s.

Thanks for the correction. I am not familiar with the slimdevice/logitech history.

OT - Napster options on the Mac?
Published (2009-12-01 12:54:00)
Just recently signed up for Napster unlimited after having tried it out for 30 days on a Sonos. As far as I can tell the only ways to make full use of the service generally are either via Sonos, mysqueezebox, the PC software or via the web interface. Are there any other ways to use Napster on a Mac? I saw some mentions suggesting Napster may be building a Mac software client possibly. Thanks

Rhino lossless

Interesting description of a FLAC file by RHINO on their website. I see even they don't fully understand "lossless" (see their reference to "almost all the information" in quote below.) "FLAC is a Lossless format, so almost all the information from the original sound stream is retained, and the integrity of the recording is optimal."

Anyone have Rhapsody Music...
Published (2009-12-04 16:58:00)
I've been using Rapsody with a Duet since mid 2008, and it was unreliable for much of 2008. This year is a very different story. I listen to it a lot at various times of the day and week and I can't recall the last time it's not worked flawlessly. I also have a Napster account and have found that Rapsody tags its music much better. The only complaint I have about both music services is that the availability of various artists...

Phil Spector 4 disc set Back To...
Published (2009-12-05 15:48:00)
I have found this 4 disc set containing most of hit singles produced by Phil Spector. The first 3 discs contain the hit singles, while disc 4 is the Christmas album. It appears to be out of print, but is available "used". I was surprised by the title Back To Mono. Where all these songs recorded in mono? I thought that by the early 60s most recordings were in Stereo.

Excellent to see, especially since FLAC and MP3 are priced the same! And not that bad at $9.99.
Thanks for the heads up.

In no particular order here's what comes to mind, sometimes for the whole album, sometimes just for a single song. These are not necessarily the 15 most significant, but the 15 that came to mind with 15 minutes of effort and quickly twirling the thumbwheel on my SB Controller.
1. The Beatles - LOVE
2. Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
3. The Who - Tommy
4. Cheech and Chong - Los ...

I did the Rhapsody 30-day free trial about a year ago. I loved the album/track on demand service and the extent of the Rhapsody library. I didn't like the service's lack of reliability. The biggest problem was that it would often just stop in the middle of an album or a playlist I had made. Sometimes pushing "play" would start it again, but sometimes it would lose the current playlist entirely ...

Thanks for the detail. Fred Kaplan over at Stereophile mentioned problems with the set as well.
I ordered a copy, returned it because the box was damaged at both corners, got another which has only one damaged corner and have it sitting on a shelf at my office.
Haven't heard from Amazon.
As someone who owns all the Miles 'session' sets as well as most of the album rereleases from a...
