If I understand you correctly, you are getting a new computer to run SBS and do those other tasks, and you want to know about the merits of doing that on a VM on the new computer? If that's right, then the first question is what will the non-VM (ie, the real/host machine) be doing? Unless you'll be doing something different with that, I don't see any reason to run SBS on a VM. You would just be dividing up computing resources...

It's always best to back-up your files just in case; do you not use another disk drive to back-up your files? I got a 1TB Seagate External Drive from Maplin for about £80 (think they are now £90 but you may find it cheaper on the net) and I just plugged that into my QNAP via the USB port and set it up as a RAID drive so it just mirrors the QNAP disk. Once it's completed a back-up you then un-mount the drive until the next time. So...

Same here mr_hyde. I've had 7.4 running from the first official release to the most recent nightly 7.4.1. I have used them in a SbS 'native' install, SSOTS 3.23-qnap and SSOTS 4.0. In all cases the HDD's have never gone into Standby. It can only be an SbS issue. Bob

I assume, that by original Linkstation you mean a Linkstation I or Linkstation II. If you have a Linkstation Pro what I will write might not apply - search the forums for installation guides for the pro. Linkstation I and II If I remember correctly, these versions of the Linkstation had a 133/200 Mhz processor with 64 mb of ram. This is not enough to run squeezecenter v 7 upwards. You ...

Thanks flipflip, I like your instruction, clearer than QnapAndy's, which is also based on your codes. I'm not sure if Qnap's version eventually comes out to be more conflict-free after cross-compiling. Anyway, Qnap's current alpha version looks like one for arm-based models. If you don't have an SB Radio and you don't connect directly to mysqueezebox.com (formerly squeezenetwork.com) then you don't have to upgrade to 7.4.x. You can keep running 7.3.x on the QNAP, and as long as you connect to MySB.com through the QNAP, you don't have to upgrade the SC/SBS on the QNAP or the firmware. Next time you switch your music source back to the QNAP, let the fw update and ...

Hi, I'm planning to buy/build a home server, and am considering the merits of running Squeezebox Server on a VM. I'd be grateful for your opinions. At the moment my Squeezebox Server runs off a spare laptop, but I now need to use that laptop (because my main laptop has died), and so want to use this opportunity to get Squeezebox Server running on something a bit more solid and scalable....

Hi flipflip and thanks for the job. Just to clarify, I cannot instal SSODS 4.0 on my 209+ using the firmware update function as for previous release of SSODS i.e. 3.22, correct? I do not have "basic Linux hacking skills"..... :-(
