I am all about revitalization of urban centers. I think currently, there a lot of cities in the rust belt that are undergoing re-vitalization, Chicago included. This needs to continue, and has started in the other midwest cities, e.g. Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, et al. As the first article related to in this blog, that the individual choose to stay in his home city of Detroit and not be lured to other urban centers on the west coast. I...

Not long after moving here I discovered that there was a very interesting place in Oshkosh, about 15mins North of here. The place is the Paine Art Center, or the Paine Estate. http://www.thepaine.org/ Short version of its history: Back in the early 1900's, a wealthy lumber baron (Nathan Paine) decided to build a mansion. Oddly though, they had set out to not only build a mansion but an art museum. The home was to be open to the public,...

Wow I didn't expect such a fast response. Big thanks to everyone for the feedback. @ UrbanIndy - That shot was taken from the 4th floor library at Ivy Tech. The view is just another little perk to summer school. @ SkywlkrSnd - Yeah that is really random, since most of Woodruff Place was sporting Obama signs.

Say not thanks to Ayn Rand for this rebuild. If all of the neocons had their own way MN would have had to bail themselves out by their own asses and not depend upon federal monies. Tell this to all of the Bachman religious freekoids that want to crush the government. Ayn is dead, and you sucked from the federal teat for shut your mouth now you mouth breathers, for this generous rebuild. .

Q. Will the automakers collapse help or hurt the development of a midwestern high speed rail network? The argument for helping would be that the automakers have other things to worry about...that, in taking billions in bailout money, they will be politically weakened. The argument for hurting is that they'll be able to lobby that HSR means a net decrease in jobs...that the government will see their 25B as an investment and won't fund...

One of the apartments I lived in was right next to Schmeeckle (Univeristy Lake). There was a path to it that you could access from the parking lot. My roomate used to go out to the lake after bar close and steal the skinny dippers clothes. Poor schmuks. But yeah, Schmeeckle was a great little resource to have right there. I remember we took a hike out there for a Biology field trip and we saw a small snake with half a toad sticking out of his...

How did Chicago ever come to be known as " The Windy City"? It's totally inaccurate. In fact, statistics show that wind speeds in Chicago are typical of many American cities. I have a fondness for Stevens Point and I thought some of you might as well. I went to college there and had many fun times there, maybe that's part of it, but I think it's more: Stevens Point has a great little downtown. No tall buildings, but a good deal of density and variety and vibrancy. It also has waterfront ( Wisconsin River), a great little earthy/hippie/environmental college (UW-...

The people whom flock to Chicago are mostly from the midwest, particularly Indiana and Wisconsin, because they are our neighbors. After that, I would say Missouri, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. Chicago represents Illinois and only Illinois. People from other states whom TRY to claim Chicago as their own, are sadly mistaken, just ask any true Chicagoian out there....
