Alabama trails South in...
Published (2009-12-26 01:47:00)
Quote: The South now rivals the West in population growth during the first decade of the 21st century, but among Southern states, Alabama lags. The population of the South region increased 13.1 percent from April 1, 2000, to July 1, 2009, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released Wednesday. The West region's population increased 13.2 percent, the Northeast just 3.2 percent and the Midwest 3.8 percent. The United States as a...

Like I said, I don't agree with the numbers either, but I don't know his source. For all I know, it may have been a simple slip of the tongue. However, it sure would get interesting around here with the traffic. Regards, Colin

About the Van Antwerp building situation, something BETTER be done FAST! It's such an important piece of Mobile's architectural history. As for the Auburn University's landscape architecture class's proposal to create vertical soil plots, that's not really a practical endeavor. That sounds costly and requires too much maintenance for a public location. Trellises with vines are much cheaper and easier to maintain and...

It will do little to relieve traffic bound for Atlanta from Memphis or vice versa, since there's still no true direct route. Traffic through downtown will still have to deal with the junction and traffic taking the northern bypass will have to go southwest on 59 and catch 459 south to 20 east. Extending the northeast segment to meet I-20 should be in the plans. That or bridging the gap between 65 and the 20/59 split. The latter seems...

Boy, it's weird seeing Randy in this thread. Wow, he is missed
So, I was down in Auburn for Noise for Toys a few weeks ago and the new engineering buildings look AMAZING. What a great job. The campus just looks terrific.

A new vision for the beach
The Santa Rosa Island Authority on Wednesday will discuss possibilities for developing Pensacola Beach's core business area.
Architect Carter Quina was hired by the SRIA to create drawings to show what potentially could be done to improve the most popular portion of the beach.
Last week, the SRIA board asked its staff to come back at the next ...

Stupid stereotypes... Though, when you really look at the numbers, it's obvious that the reason why our growth is so small is because people are only moving to the the cities and nearly no one is moving to the countryside.

Yeah, I don't like the new endzones... but i'm in the minority on that one. I thought the old way was a bit less generic. I did like the way they cut the grass at the '08 A-Day.
The new speaker system sounded much better than last year as well. I did hear a few times where they tried to play some particularly loud bit of music and it would crackle a fair bit, though. Still, biiiiig ...

I'll start with a rant: US72 between Huntsville and Athens has got to be the worst 20-mile stretch of 4-lane highway in the state. They need to at least six-lane that sucker all the way between the two cities, flatten the blind spots in certain sections, and limit future access rights to the road. 72 through Madison is an absolute mess that does not need to spread. What kind of idiots thought ...

Hyatt or Hilton would both be welcome additions. Also there is an article in the P-R today about the Mardi Gras Park land. The county comission asked the city to clarify a time frame that they would raise the funds to build the park. The old contract basically said the city had all eternity to raise moeny for the park. The new agreement says the city has four years to raise the money after ...

Downtown demolition
The city closed one lane of Holmes Avenue downtown this morning to make it easier and safer for crews to demolish what was left of the building that used to house Old Towne Brewery. A fire gutted the building last year.
Brewery co-owner Don Alan Hankins, whose beer-making operation is up and running bigger than ever on Leeman Ferry Road, said today he has offers ...

So, that article confirms that a building will be torn down soon across Shelby Lane from Shelby Hall. Nice to finally know what's actually gonna happen.
The sad thing is, these earmarks are actually necessary, because Alabama did not get its fair share of "stimulus money"
