no, but as luck would have it, i was bored enough to spend some more time with it. i found out that the button that warms up the steamer also has another function. if you start with the machine completely shut off but still plugged in, and press and hold the steam button, it gives you instructions for descaling and walks you through the process, telling you what to do at each step until you are done. so i did it and just finished a few...

You get one for $5 but like I said each new machine comes with the disc. The disc has no cleaning fluid of any kind in it it is just a disc that lets you run the water from the tank into a cup. So unless you put a cleaning product in the tank it will be just plain old hot water. When I had my Tassimo the cleaning disc that came with it lasted as long as I had the machine.

I guess they call it a cleaning disc because they do recommend running it on a regular basis to help flush out any residue left in/on the piercing unit. They especially recommend running it after hot chocolate and milk drinks. You also must have this in place when the you have to descale your machine (a special indicator light goes on and you put a solution in the water tank and with the cleaning disc in place run the descale cycle).
