One last shotgun?
Published (2009-11-27 15:18:00)
Strat, Thanks for the link. I'm aware of the gun and caliber. Also just finished reading the American Rifleman article on the 370 Sako. Sounds promising, but at this point in my life I need another rifle like I need a hole in the head. I mostly have all Model 70s. The .338WM is my only post '64 gun. Others are all pre '64 and include the .338-06, .375H&H, .358, 30-06, .270, .257 Robert AI and a .220 Swift. I have a few...

Car collectors have some technical definitions such as Classic, Vintage, Antique based on age and production status of cars. Maybe the same system could apply to shotguns.

One last shotgun?

Quote: an older depression era field grade gun in 16 or 20 gauge, but I doubt under $1000 as those are carrying a premium right now. 20 Gauge guns are priced higher, but 16 Gauge guns are relatively cheap. Mine cost me $285, and a little work. 16 Gauge, 2 3/4" Lefever Nitro Special (Ithaca). It's a Jazz Age gun, not a Depression Era gun, though. Good as 16 Gauge might objectively be, the market demand for a 16 Gauge working gun...

beretta 391 stonecoat vs benelli...
Published (2009-11-26 19:45:00)
Welcome to SGW. Both are very good models that are well made and reliable. The Monte is geared more for upland compared to the all around use of the AL391. The Monte is lighter in weight than the Beretta and both are thin models. The Beretta can have all the weight added if you ever felt the need and the Monte is good to around a pound or so. They both can go longer periods between cleanings with the MOnte having the edge. The Monte is much...

Why not post that in the Calssified forum? You will get a better response there than posting in a year and a half old thread.

Browning Gold 10 ga compared to...
Published (2009-11-27 09:13:00)
I own the SP10. Never had to opportunity to shoot the Browning. There is many things going for the Browning though : It's a little lighter to carry. : Dura touch is nicer than what ever Remington uses if you like camo. : Holds more rounds if your doing something other than Waterfowl. : Little easier to load no button to press to release the loading gate. : Comes with a broader range of chokes : Easier to disassemble from what I can tell...

I really think the 870 has met the test-nearly 60 years old with over 10 million sold, and still in production and selling well. There wil never be an exact criteria for the designation, but it's fun to argue about!

Merkel sporting clays gun?
Published (2009-11-25 11:52:00)
In the past, Merkel built trap and skeet models.....perhaps still do. A friend had an early trap combo with 30" O/U barrels and a 32" top single. The Merkel importer should be able to special order a sporting clays model.

In that price range a nicely used Remington 1100 or 870 should work just fine

Some of the young guys who shoot skeet at the club have had issues with that cheap Gold Wing O/U. One guy didn't even get off 5 shells or finish post 1 for that matter before an issue developed. One other guy had his gun mishandled (marks) at the service center. All you have to do is search on this site about these guns and most of the time it's not good. Some say it's bashing but, I don't know....

Remington hires some really good people to write those descriptions. The money to pay them evidently comes from budget cuts in R&D, Industrial Engineering and Quality Assurance. The 1100 (a revision of the Sportsman 58) is almost 50 years old. Back then, it was a revolutionary gun, since it was an affordable gas-operated semiauto that actually cycled when you fired it. The first gun in its ...

IMO just stick with the known, reliable brands, and you will be fine. You will not be shooting thousands of rounds through a turkey gun, in fact you will be shooting probably only ten to fifteen rounds per year at most, so you will never wear out a turkey gun. Winchester, Mossberg and Browning are all very good. The fact is if you are doing things right you will be shooting many different choke ...

In that range a Lanber or used Browning/Beretta is the way to go, IMHO.

The 11-48 series are among my favorite old guns (I've owned 3 of them). Field grade 12g's typically sell for under $250, but an actual skeet grade gun will be worth more. Small gauge guns are often worth considerably more. Guns with VR barrels are somewhat rare and are more desirable in my mind. These guns are solid and very well built. Not much will go wrong with them, and spare parts are ...
