That is part of the fun for me, I really like working up loads for individual rifles and then picking what I want to hunt with that day. I like to shoot. Kinda like Church for me! Scotty

Choice of Rifle in 25 06
Published (2009-11-23 15:47:00)
I have several .25/06s, 3 Rugers (1 M77, 1 M77MKII, 1 #1) and 1 Remington 700 ADL, all are walnut, but the #1 and MKII have exceptional wood. For the money, I don't think you can beat the Marlin, although you couldn't give me a Savage. With the Hawkeye you get free scope rings and if you buy before 12/31 you get a free Carhartt coat. That is worth an extra $120.

The 300 Win Mag is an excellent caliber as the 7MM Mag. I have both are depending on the bullet you chose to shoot both have long range bullet tradjectories. The 300 Win mag has much more recoil then the 7mm mag and would be felt more in a light rifle. The 300 Win mag has an edge at long distance but the 7mmMag is also a flat shooting rifle. My Son Glenn's one shot Elk kill in September with my Sako 7mm Mag at 297 yards with a 160 grain...

Nosler 125 Grain Ballistic Tip -...

It might depend on the brass you have. I loaded them out for the .30-06 and have also done that for the 6.5x55, didn't have any trouble with neck tension but other brass may give a different result. Think I was using R-P brass for both. On the other hand, a few came out when I did the same with the .22-250. It has been loaded with a Lee Target Model loader and the necks were thin. Good luck......

Thanks Big Dan and Tang. I'll try that. I've got to get some business cards from people anyway before there aren;t any businesses left in America, so I'll set a few aside just for that purpose. I'm guessing the cards will go crosswise under the barrel(?) I mean, not lengthwise in front of the lug, but crosswise, right? By the way, the barrel is "free floated" in that I can slide a dollar or any heavy paper all the...

Well, what can I say. I've been hunting for 29 years and I've killed almost 70 deer with many guns, with stick and string, with pistols, and with muzzloaders. I find getting close to the animal is what makes hunting hunting, and I always look to get as close as possible. My self imposed limit is 300-350 yds, but I've never killed anything further than 260 yds. I personally don't think anyone should be shooting at healthy...

Back in the late 70's, I had a model 800 in a .243. It was accurate and durable. I handloaded for it and never thought it was any less strong than my Remington's or Ruger's. I didn't mess with the trigger, though; it was about 4 pounds, as I remember, and OK. The rifle was capable of 1-1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards when I was. The price you quoted sounds like a reasonable; heck, you can't get a...

Honestly? I don't think I would shoot anything at less than 200 with any bullet. You'd have so much meat damage, you might not have to gut it. A solid copper bullet might not "explode". but I know a Sierra Gameking would definitely come from together.
I put a 180 grain Accubond through 7 (seven) count 'em 7 milkjugs full of water at 100 yards and there was a hole in the 8th one.

Congratulations! Every deer I have seen shot with the .243 has been DRT! Have yet to trail one. The doe in my avatar was taken by my daughter with a .243 at about 95-100 yards. It dropped so fast I had to take a double take to make sure she had hit it.

As I understand it, and have experienced in my hunting, the RN bullets allow for more reliable expansion at lower velocities or on smaller animals. That big chunk of lead out front starts to open at the slightest resistance and starts making a larger wound channel quicker.
Using one in a 300 Ultra, I don't know about. It might make a pretty good deer bullet for the timber, but then again ...

The X-Mark is nice, but the older Remmy triggers are adjustable too. Also,
I just gave my VTR away. The muzzle brake is useless, especially on the
calibers that the VTR come in. The triangle barrel looks cool, and my
22-250 did shoot a sub 0.3" group, but the SPS would get you more velocity
with the 26" barrel. The VTR only has 20" of usable barrel. I say go for
the SPS.

Almost never. I found one bonded bullet in a deer ham about 6 months after the fact, didn't know that's where it had ended up. Shot another in the chest without an exit wound, and that one was somewhere in the guts and I did not bother looking for it (cast bullet so it was in there whole, somewhere). Oh and one 180gr. Ballistic tip that grenaded somewhere in the goo of what's left of a doe's ...

I shot the Elk shown below this year with my Sako 338 Win Mag shooting a reload with a Hornady 225 grain interlock SP bullet traveling at 2900 FPS. The bullet hit him at 80 yards just behind the heart area and about 10 inches above the bottom of his Chest. He had moved into a stand of scrub oak and I had a very small opening to shoot into. He turned and went about 40 yards and laid down on a game...

Love my 300 Win Mag. I have had no reason to explore the WSM since the old standby brings more than enough to the table for most game I hunt. Good luck in your search and buy what you "want", not what others want.
