You neeed to be carrying an Epi-pen and get a medical Alert tag or bracelet stating your allergies. A nut allergy is NOTHING to fool around with. The next reaction could be severe and cause anaphalactic shock. Respect your condition. Please. for your safety. xo C

@sailordave, definite facepalm. Even if I only saw r**ster, why didn't I think "roaster" first instead of the more unlikely rooster? Maybe because I think of it as a roastING chicken rather than a roastER, but that's not much of a defense. But yeah, it's funny.

If the reaction you get to peanuts (or other nuts, or any other food) involves swelling of the throat area it's critically important that you not try them at all in any fashion. Your airways could swell and you could have trouble breathing, which would be life-threatening and potentially fatal. (None of this "unless I'm willing to suffer the consequences" bit). I assume you've seen an allergist? It's possible you...

Um...I'm not sure what kind of medical experts we have around here, but I can offer the very little I know about peanuts. They're a legume (peas, beans, lentils, etc), not a nut. Peanut allergies can be extremely severe, with just peanut dust causing people to go into anaphylactic shock. *I don't know that the following is true...or just an urban legend* I remember learning somewhere that peanut allergies are much higher in...

Post-Thanksgiving Report
Published (2009-11-27 01:40:00)
My Thanksgiving was great. I took cranberry sauce and two pies: sour cream apple pie and a pumpkin pie . These are my first pies and my first homemade pie crusts (usually use store-bought for the occasional quiche), but they turned out great. The sour cream apple pie was the biggest hit though. A good meal plus good wine followed by a dip in the hot tub, then pie, makes for a pretty foolproof-good event.

Post-Thanksgiving Report
Published (2009-11-27 01:32:00)
I cooked my 14 lb. turducken in an oven bag, which worked great, except this inadvertently reduced the roasting time from 5 hours to 3-1/2 hours, so I had to hold it at 200°F for almost two hours until all my guets arrived. It was still juicy and flavorful, a sucess. All my sides came out well, especially the potato leek soup w/pancetta, the maple & bacon braised collard greens, the cane syrup & pecan roasted sweet potatoes, the...

@tapioca--You are correct. Thank goodness the Portuguese brought them over because it was a good snack when I was in Ghana and hungry much of the time!!!!

I'm trying to slowly switch over to glass. I've gotten a couple of the square glass containers with the snap-tight lids at BB&B. They can stack, as the lids are plastic and don't slip and slide. They're more expensive than the plastic sets, but I just feel better going with glass.

I don't know what you have cindy22 but fresh English peas - in other parts of the country they're called peas, green peas, or sweet peas - should be removed from the shell and dropped in boiling water for about 3 minutes. They really only need to be warmed through. The question is what are they and where did they come from at this time of year since English peas are a springtime vegetable. ...

Cranberry Orange Salsa Mom makes this every Thanksgiving. It's way better than any cranberry sauce we've ever had since I was a kid. I think it's because the cranberries aren't cooked in this salsa.

NO! You are absolutely not alone. I'm actually kind of a humbug all-around with holidays (christmas included). They're all just another day in my book. However, I am outgoing and fairly optimistic/cheery, so my indifference is pretty benevolent. My bf and I have spent both Thanksgiving and Christmas out of state with friends for the past three years. This year would have been the 4th in...

@ElsieC, MacGourmet looks interesting, especially if you have an iPhone to sync it with for shipping lists and such. It looks as though its cupboard find feature is the kind of thing you mentioned. I haven't tried it but I've looked at a lot of PC recipe software packages and this one seems comparable to some of the better PC versions I've seen for home use.

Good question. These are guesses- I hope somebody knows. It could be older - how much did it weigh? in other words, I wonder if it's more like a stewing hen, or if it's just a young male bird. If it's like a Tom turkey the biggest difference you'd notice would be less breast meat and more leg meat. Found these sights, which basically say to treat it like a stewing hen. And then there's...
