A week in the Keys in April
Published (2010-01-02 13:07:00)
It has been decades since I've been to the Keys; any places I might remember may be long gone or drastically changed. We used to camp on Sugar Loaf Key, yet I do not recall any place particularly outstanding around there. If I recall correctly, the drive from Marathon to Key West is long (I was so young, I was not yet driving myself, so I could be mistaken. That may have been childhood boredom making it seem longer than it was). My...

@Adam -- I was a little disconcerted by the communal tables, and our waitress completely ignored us, but my friends and I loved, loved, loved it there. We were fortunate enough to go during happy hour, when they sell half-sized pies for $5, so we ordered a variety of pies and ate until we could barely walk to Pike Place Market for Thanksgiving dinner shopping. I'm originally from Vancouver, but I'm in Seattle often enough during my...

Munching in Moldova? Suggestions?
Published (2010-01-04 20:52:00)
@dmcavanagh - if you do make a comment about it, try to work in the word "munching" - lol! And for the record, I was thinking about the Dark Chocolate Nutty Bits that POM hides in her bra drawer! lol again... Since I've caused this thread to take a turn for the worse, here's my peace offering - moldova.org recipes. Once again, the site mentions wines, but the recipes may give you an idea of what to expect. It seems like...

I wish I could remember restaurant names that I visited in Madrid but unfortunately I was a young kid. My parents took us to visit my great grandmothers side of the family. I do remember it as an amazing city, full of amazing food. I remember calamari, the most amazing, delicious calamari I've ever had. I hope you have an awesome time, I'm jealous. (also hope someone has better tips than me)

The show "Spain...On the Road", had me planning a trip to Spain, a trip I never imagined, but I was so enthralled by the food and country-side of Spain. I bought all the travel books and plotted an itinerary before the hubs came home with surprise tickets to Paris, which was a most memorable birthday gift. But I haven't given up on Spain and hopefully we will get there. Let us know what you ...

You do get out & about, don't you POM? I had to look that one up!
Wikipedia calls out their wines, so I would start (and end) there. Good luck, and let us know what you do end up eating.
And don't hide any snacks in your undies - they'll getcha in the airports now!

Pinche Taqueria at Lafayette & Bleecker, and Mercadito at Avenue B between 10th and 11th are both really good. Pinche is much cheaper and more casual than Mercadito, which has a few other locations in the city I believe. Happy eating!

In high school, a close friend who adored Mexican food would have gladly eaten every meal at Casa Comida in Long Branch. That was longer ago than I would care to admit, and I heard the place has gone 'downhill' since then.
Some people I know like El Meson in Freehold, but I haven't been there myself. I don't like ( American-style) Mexican food, really, so that is why, despite being a long ...

[ ...continued. Sorry, I'm a windbag :) ]
It was quite disconcerting. Here I was eating some of the most luxurious, well crafted, beautiful food there is, and it was nearly ruined by too much salt. I say nearly, because despite it all it still managed to be good. I did eat every morsel. I didn't send any back though, because there was nothing to be done. It's not like they could change their ...

I just ate there last week, and everything was still up to par in my book. I had noticed a while back that the food had started lacking a certain 'punch' [i.e. kick], but learned I just needed to be more emphatic about what I wanted (THAI spicy, repeated 3x, nicely but firmly - unless we get our favorite waitress Ying, who knows how we like it).
That said, I really like Ayada (big pluses: ...
