You want it stiffer for the shoulders (easier to don) and soft for the crotch (obvious reasons). It will still soften with use.

DIR is indeed a philosophy and method of thinking so to speak. I do believe that it evolves over time. The big thing to relaize with DIR is that it takes a simplistic and uniform aproach to diving. I use bungie with zip ties. I used to use surgical tubing like the manta premade ones but it doesn't stretch as easily. I zip tie it so it can't be removed you don't want a bolt snap on your backup
