Exposition vs. dialogue...
Published (2009-11-10 22:08:00)
As both TE and Judge have said, there's really not any specific rules balance, and it really all depends on what kind of story you want. Any story worth its salt will have action and dialogue, character depth and visual, background and focus, but stories that revolve more around action should have very little dialogue ratio, while those that are slower and more drawn out, such as novel series-especially in traditional fantasy, where...

Re: NaNoWriMo - 09 It's started to dawn on me, now, the enormity of this thing. I'm not quite at 20,000 words yet, just about on page 28 (in Word). When (if) I finish, I'll have about 75 pages of story. That's a load! It's already the longest thing I've ever written (already double the length of the carefully planned story I've been writing for a few months) and I'm only just over a third of the way...

Re: NaNoWriMo - 09 P.S. If you have a problem shutting your inner editor up, this is a VERY good way of doing it. Especially if you have to squint to work out what your writing says once you're done (less chance you can be bothered to listen to the whim of said editor at any given moment).

I've got EBON - the book of names. It generates some weird stuff sometimes, but often I just use a couple of syllables rather than the whole name. ebon.pyorre.net

NaNoWriMo - 09 Well, the clock is ticking, and it's almost time for NaNo 09. Who is going to give it a shot? I've decided I may as well try. I've never written before because I have large self doubts about my plot not being good enough, and stuff like that. I've decided to get rid of them all, and just try it. Be prepared for me to disappear for the month of November.

Hello, Steve. I'm glad to see you're so active again. This thread really isn't suited to the Workshop (which is basically meant for brainstorming and excercises), so I've moved it to AW.

Just a quick question: how long do most people spend on editing or re-drafting a manuscript? My first book had ages spent on it whereas my second, which I am editing now, I am aiming to self-publish at the end of the year. What do others do - spend years tweaking or just a few weeks?

For people I can't think of names for, they get placeholders until the whole thing is done. Usually while I'm mulling over things a name will pop into my head (or, more usually, I'll think of a reference to something and a suitable name will apear) and I can do a global find/replace. I write a lot about characters called Bob, Jim, Sue and Tim as a result.

Thread moved from Writing Resources to Aspiring Writers. I wouldn't say that a piece of furniture actually qualifies as a writing resource, even if you sit in it when you write, and I think you'll get more replies to this if it's in a more appropriate subforum. I have no suggestions, except to say what you probably already know, that which chair is right for who is ... not subjective, ...

to paraphrase Robert Jordan (and my memory is fuzzy here): "It wasn't the end, but it was an end...." in other words, i think even a story with a definite ending (he's dead, she's dead, they marry each other, he elopes with an orc etc etc etc etc) deserves to have a few loose ends that aren't tied up, simply because nothing in real life just stops like that either. it gives a kind of ...

Re: Anyone else use a dictaphone to write? Hi Fi, And does it put in your punctuation for you? ie speech marks, paragraphs etc. Can you write a novel with the speech software, or do you have to go over it and insert them? I have been thinking about them, especially since I might dicover my 'voice' better this way. How easy/difficult is it to do? Boneman

Re: Change of PoV - Insane? My problem with these lightbulb moments is that the lightbulbs are most often the 100watt ones you used to get from Woolworths - really bright for a short while and then they blow, leaving you scrambling around in the dark. I think second person could work for a short story, or maybe a longer work in literary fiction (where the form, rather than the ...
