Sapheron, that is true about vodka. But just think if you mix it with Red Bull. You'd be a hyper drunk with lots of energy to type away. (lol) I just thought it would be an interesting thing to try. To see how it would effect your writing--or not. Maybe next year. As for me, I got 1900 words left. I plan to finish them off soon. Congrats to everyone finishing so far.

I've finished, I finished friday night, but forgot to post it. Here's a list I compiled of all the things I learnt -It is easy to write 1667 words in a day. -therefore, it isn't too bad if I leave my 1000 word assignments to the last night before they're due ^_^ -In fact, it's easy to write 3000 words a day, if I really try -SO much of what authors write is filler. If you're wondering why something is in a book,...

Active and reactive protagonists
Published (2009-11-29 12:44:00)
I’ve read several times that fiction is about the choices characters make. The classic model is as follows: protagonist faces a dilemma, makes a choice, and then has to deal with the consequences of that choice, leading to further dilemmas, etc. I know that this is a satisfying model, but I now realise that I’m in danger of not following it. When planning and writing my stories I’ve been thinking mostly in terms...

Good post, Harebrain, and a useful reminder to us all. I think you're right in saying, though, that there must be an element of the protagonist being buffeted by other peoples' decisions. After all, your second-tier characters and/or baddies can't simply be reactive either, otherwise they will seem unrealistic. Moreover, I wonder if it's possible to overplay the dilemma/choice thing. How will the readers feel if it seems...

Dreams

Re: Dreams 'Wake, Grabbing for Notebook'... To my chagrin, most of my 'Urban Fantasy' stuff derives from WGFN ideas. I've a 'HardSF' arc and a couple of 'technoShorts' which I've done by sitting down in daylight and planning, but all the rest... Okay, so I get a bunch of 'dream sequence' stuff, but then I must knit the pieces together into a meaningful plot, extend, extrapolate, and...

Re: Hard to finish a fantasy novel Why NOT a trilogy? Wouldn't that be like saying, "Oh! I dont wanna make $300 k. I only want $100 k." LOL. It aint like a trilogy is gonna take 3 times the effort n energy of a one-off stand-alone. Cos you've already got the momentum, the mental plot, the story map, the characters etc. Rather than tossing stuff you'd expended time n energy crafting, why dont you stash the...

Students are meant to work twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, two weeks a year. The closer you are to a deadline the faster you can work. It's more efficient to leave it to do...

NaNoWriMo - 09 Well, the clock is ticking, and it's almost time for NaNo 09. Who is going to give it a shot?
I've decided I may as well try. I've never written before because I have large self doubts about my plot not being good enough, and stuff like that. I've decided to get rid of them all, and just try it.
Be prepared for me to disappear for the month of November.

For reasonably blatant published usages of info-dumping, check out David Weber's Harrington books which, while being straight-forward enough reads, do require heavy and regular 'dumping to set the scene and explain the mechanics of FTL interstellar travel. They also feature regular instances of head-hopping , which I'm pretty sure ...

Re: Synopses... A couple of things I noted on reading your synopsis.
It sounds like a kid's story right up to the point where the mother kills herself, which I found a bit jarring. Is there a way to inform the reader that this is in actual fact an adult's (or young adult's) story?
There seems to be little conflict in this story. You mention the father's bias but it isn't ...

As a matter of fact, I quite like this one: "It seems occasionally [that] events occur which, had they not happened, no one would imagine they could." (I added some commas, too) It appeals to my quirkiness.
And surely this is Douglas Adams: "... supressing the urge to smile out loud."
But, ooh, Matron ... "Ejaculations aside,...

Are dreams an important part of anyone else's writing process? I've had some of my best story ideas in dreams. Sometimes when I'm working on a story, plot points and motifs will reveal themselves to me in dreams. Actually, almost everything that I've actually had published either originated in a dream or was given some major dream-assistance along the way.

Multitasking How many of you are comfortable working on more than one story at a time? I have ideas for three short stories at present and I've started writing one of them. However, I'm wary of starting too many things at a time. Re: Change of PoV - Insane? My problem with these lightbulb moments is that the lightbulbs are most often the 100watt ones you used to get from Woolworths - really bright for a short while and then they blow, leaving you scrambling around in the dark.
