I discovered the hard way just how sharp my chisels are. Last Monday afternoon, I managed to push a 10mm (about 3/8") wide chisel all the way through my left thumb. I was trying to pare away a small square of plywood on the edge of a sheet when the chisel slipped off the edge and literally dived into my thumb. As I staggered away from the bench I knew I had cut myself badly, but I was ...

I'm about to build the NYW jewelry box and was about to order the hardware. The hinge the plan refers to (Rockler Item 62808) is no longer available. I haven't been able to find another 3/8 by 16" long stopped piano hinge elsewhere. I was thinking that http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/page.aspx?c=2&ca t=3,41241,41264,46487&p=46487 ]quadrant hinges[/url] would be stronger anyway,...

I'm new to Sawmill Creek so hopefully I'm doing this correctly! Just assembling my used Unisaw for the first time from a complete tear down, rebuild, restoration (1979 model so not to terribly old). Some parts were missing, such as the dust shield in front of the blade, some tapped holes were damaged and had to be helicoiled but all in all just very dirty. When I went to start...

I picked up this 14" Craftsman bandsaw for $175. Is this a good price for this bandsaw? Also is there any upgrades to the saw that I can do or any problems to look out for? Thanks Tom

I was pleased to get a letter in the mail telling me that there will be a Woodcraft franchise store opening in my hometown of Ventura, CA in a October. We need one -- the nearest Rockler or Woodcraft is almost 2 hours away. Too far for me to drive. THe bad news is my wallet is feeling lighter already... -TH

There was a article in one of the various woodworking magazines that was basically a block of wood. Then a band saw curve cut into it with some thin strips of contrasting wood sandwiched into those curves and glued back together. Anyone know which mag that was?

I went by my local wood supplier (Peach State Lumber) this week to grab a little cherry and walnut and when I walked in the door my jaw hit the floor! In front of me was a slab about 16'x7' of the most beautiful and perfect bubinga I have ever seen! then as Turned in an intoxicated state I started noticing all of the other specimens they had just received. I don't know if your local...

6 Oct 2008 Good morning everyone, Finished up a rather long week of oncall duty at work. I was quickly reminded that I can't do all nighter type work much any more without suffering for days afterward trying to get my sleep cycle back. I am off call as of this morning and I'm GLAD it's over. No woodworking for me this weekend....just work for the day job that I got all ...

The trouble with reading this forum is the illusion that it’s a jovial gathering of bud’s sitting around the table saw talking shop. When your jolly pal start telling you of the unbelievable deal they got on a tool, only to be interrupted by the others spouting off about their latest outstanding acquisitions. I mumble to myself that these guys are like my buddy’s fish that keeps ...

Hello all, A while back, I bought a Delta variable speed grinder to exclusively sharpen, polish up carving tools and knives. I keep it at the lowest speed as this is best for most carving tools. What I don't really like about it is that the grinding wheels rotate towards me...or clockwise where most other grinders I had used before rotate the opposite way. I find it both dangerous,...

Alright... How many of you (like I did just this morning) have cut through your fancy-shmancy aluminum miter guage fence on the tablesaw? This is the second time that I just needed to make a quick cut and didn't check to make sure that the fence would clear the blade. Nothing like the sound of carbide slicing through $150 worth of aluminum!! UGH! Jason...

Polyurethane foam - 25 new posts

Never used Polyurethane (ie. gorilla glue) and am considering giving it a try. I would use resorcinal glue but I'm currently out. Just some trim pieces on a cedar flower box. How do you deal with the foam? Keep wiping until it quits foaming? Wait till it cures, then "scrape" it off? Painters tape adjacent to the joint then peel the tape off? Just how messy is this stuff? -Joe...

How do you feel about your saw power resawing? Too weak? More than enough or Just right? A dealer keeps telling me that a 20" is the way to go because of more power. But The price is right on the 17" grizzly and at this point if a 20" is the only way to go I would not make a purchase. Just more money than I would like to spend. Not 100% convinced I "need" this saw anyway. Just a "...

Storing Fasteners - 19 new posts

Every time I buy a box of nails or screws they get put into a plastic box. Lately, I'm finding that I'm buying the same sets over and over because I can't find anything in all the mess. I have some stored in an Ace small drawer cabinet (the cheap kind), some on shelves, some in the box and others...wherever. What is your solution for fastener storage? Thanks, Burt

Hi all, I just got a post card in the mail today about The Wood Working Shows are going to be coming to Salt Lake City October 23 to 25. I missed going last time because my day job got in the way. I intend to go this time. Anyone have any first hand knowledge on these shows. Are they worth $6 for a single day visit or $9 for a three day pass? Just wondering.

When I first bought my hybrid TS, I knew I had to replace the miter. I found a great deal on a Jessem Mastr-Slide. The sliding table has been real slick, however, I was always having aggravation in dealing with tear out. Sometimes it seemed I would spend more time trying to find a suitable backing board, then actually cutting. This has led me to building a crosscut sled. I have ...

I've just scored a PC 7518 router and a Woodpecker lift. I'll be tossing the old table I threw together a few years ago and am researching what sort of new table to build. I'm torn between a deluxe NORMesque table or mounting to the tablesaw. I'm looking for some input from those of you with the saw mounted routers. Other than being a stable platform and making existing ...

I got this to consolidate several dedicated shapers into a single station for my cab door production. I figure that if I am going to survive the downturn in the housing market, I need to invest in equipment that will let me do more with less. This is the most basic Class shaper that SCM offers. They also make a version with CNC control of everything. It came with a 4-wheel ...
