Gary - very nice looking bowl! Love the wood! About the only suggestion I have is to increase the size of your photos to 800x600 from now on so when can really enjoy your turnings.

Nice work Bill. Sometimes a smaller steady is more convenient to use than the big one.

Great job on the ornaments, and neat idea on packaging. The box elder one sure picks up the color of the Padauk - great combination.

I can feel your heart pounding from here! Those near disasters are tough on the old ticker! But your quick confidence and compassion for her so she would not have to sit on the floor was quick thinking! I am not sure you will last until the big day but, if a few prayers are said and the force is with you, all will work out great. That is if she already has not figured it out and is just playing along with you.......You said wicked smart,...

Jamie,
They make a special jig for sharpening a straight skew. It is basically a saddle that with 2 V's each offset equally from the middle.
What you need to do to sharpen a straight skew without that device is use the the basic tiltable table and just slide the skew back and forth across the table. Free hand it.

Just to name a few: Arizona Sihouette, Bear Tooth Woods, Berea Hardwoods, Woodturningz, Wooden Whimsies, Craft Supplies USA, Woodcraft, Packard Woodworks, Augum Pen Works and there are others I am sure. I buy most of my kits from the first three listed and a few from Woodcraft.

Hello, I would get a good 4 jaw chuck. You have many differents one to chose from and I'm sure you will find all to be good. Just stay with a name brand and remember the jaws do not interchange form one brand of a chuck to a different band. Good luck and welcome to the turners world. I'm sure from now on you will make most of the gifts that you give away. Roger

I've never used a SN2 but I have a Talon that I use on a JWL 1236 lathe. The Talon is a great chuck, very smooth to operate and the insert adapter can be changed out to fit different size spindles if you change lathes. You will want a 1" 8tpi adapter for the 1236.

for my finishing cuts with a scraper, I use a burnisher to reduce the size of the burr on the scraper, then hold the scraper at a 45 degree angle and take really light cuts

Ben - I built a ballast box based on Dominic's design and have been happy using that. A number of folks have built tool storage (think cabinets with drawers) under their lathes - should be able to find them doing a search. Keep in mind you will want to keep some leg room so you can get close enough to the lathe on some of your turnings.

Not nearly enough.
In reality, I probably get about half the time you do, Mike.

Dunno why you're not happy with that cabinet. It looks it'll work real fine to me. Good job.

Matt,
There are a lot of left -handed turners.
IMHO when it comes to turning, one needs to be ambidextrous. While I am right handed, I practice and make a lot of cuts with both hands.
One could get a lathe with reverse and turn from what is normally considered the back side I suppose. I don't think there is any disadvantage to being left-handed when turning.

Can't go wrong with Thompson. If you keep them sharp most brands will work. I am still using a few carbon steel Craftsman that I got when I was around 12 years old. That was a l o n g time ago. Time does fly by.

Bo, I certainly am not qualified to answer your question, since my tenure in the round world is about a month longer than yours!
But, I would hesitate using pine for a couple of reasons, the primary being strength, and the other being finish. I would think getting a nice, smooth and durable finish on pine might be difficult. Seems it would ding and get splinters.
But, most ...
