Snafu, I didn't realize you are in China! That's pretty wild. SoCoolGifts, I'm sorry. While I may have suggested China ETFs, I actually don't have any personal experiences or specific recommendations. As a starting place though, you could try looking into a major brokerage's ETF offerings. For example, it appears that both Fidelity and T Rowe Price will allow you to buy PowerShare Golden Dragon ETF (PGJ). But please...

The check is held for 10 business days, which is actually 14 days because of the weekends. I was credited with the interest for the 14 days that my check for $390,000 was held. So, I did not lose any money.

Understand ex-dividend dates
Published (2009-11-25 11:27:00)
I think you may be slightly over-complicating the dividend dates. If you want to purchase a stock because you anticipate a good dividend yield and capital return, then you should buy the stock. Once you buy it, you will then own the stock when it arrives at the next ex-dividend date and subsequent declaration date and thus receive the dividends. It's really very simple, actually. You just can't expect to receive dividends if you...

Yeah kork, me too! Although I inherited these HH bonds, the thought of converting them to TIPS is really intriguing. Anyone else with some thoughts on this escapade?

Best way may be through an international ETF that targets the Chinese market. A couple of caveats. Yes, China is hot. However, the Chinese stock market is strictly government-regulated. For example, shorting stocks is strictly forbidden, and unfortunately, that has lead to stock bubbles where some have lost fortunes. Despite the fact that you can't short. Also, the Chinese market is ...

Steve, when I sold a house in 2007, they held the attorney's escrow check for 10 business days also and I could not use the funds for that until the 10 days were up. They explained to me, that had I had enough of my own personal money in their bank, (in this case it was $390,000) the check would have cleared immediately, but because I did NOT have $390,000 in their bank, they had to hold the ...

Generally they are not a great idea. Run away from variable annuities. They are basically mutual funds that can lose or gain value and can be converted into fixed annuities at retirement. A fixed annuity would pay you a set percent of interest. It is insured but if too many annuity companies fail, it could lose value. Basically with this type of annuity you would be paying the company to ...

Don't do it. Your post brings up a couple of key points: 1. Insurance should not be an investment. Insurance is to protect yourself in the case of an unanticipated event. If you need life insurance, get a term policy and invest the savings elsewhere. 2. Do your homework and don't do what 'everyone else' is doing. Just because others are doing it (like your neighbors) should never be a ...

I guess it depends on whether or not you think that the stock price will go up or down, as this is also something to consider. You will receive more or less shares depending on the price of the stock at the time of purchase. The number of shares owned will effect how much you receive in dividend payments as well.

For those who may not know the Permanent Portfolio consists of: 25% S&P 500 index 25% Long term treasuries 25% Cash 25% Gold This mix has returned a little over 9% the last 37 years and actually made 1.97% in 2008. It has only lost money a few times and the returns are steady. Your not going to be flying high with 40% returns when the market is on a tear but you shouldn't have ...
