So if the economy needs me, I'm very sorry but I won't be helping much at all. Me too. I no longer buy stuff just for the sake of buying something. Gag gifts are a waste and nobody needs another candle, chia pet or any of that. So, I only buy for my kids and that's it. If people don't like it, too bad. I am just not going to participate in that nonsense of buying useless junk.

Scanner: Your thoughts aren't neccesarily sociolistic. This mother is going with a system that rewards bad behavior. I guarantee that she knows many other single mothers that feed off the system. Why serve food when you can just get a free check sent every month. Believe me, this ain't an original concept. She can't imagine actually going out and doing gruelling physical labor and why even seek work when you can bitch and...

Gardener here. I would use seed money to grow butternut squash (a pumpkin-like winter squash). One hill of vines can yield about 21 pounds of squash. It takes six seeds for me to plant one hill. By planting seed from a fresh store bought squash, I can get 60 seeds (scooped out before cooking the squash) to plant. The squash will cost me about $1 per pound and the squash might weigh 3 pounds, so the 60 seeds within will have cost me $3. Those...

I think it's funny, almost like a game of retail chicken -- stores want to be more careful to preserve their profits, but shoppers don't want to spend as heavily as in previous years. Now it's basically a question of who blinks first. Will prices be lowered, or will shoppers give in and buy anyway? I went out yesterday actually hoping to find a couple clothing items I've been looking for for a while, but to little avail......

If you want "value", I recommend the following to my patients:
Restonic - Supporting Dreams | Restonic Mattress
I get no kickback for this. I am not a fan of Serta. It's "cheap" but I don't think it's a "value."
I also agree with the review that a mattress salesman gave this (he probably does get a kickback; it was positive), that you have to factor in a couple of different ...

That's an impossible question to answer. You need to look at it in terms of the max they should spend to purchase the home. The current value is irrelevant.
Here's why it is impossible. It depends how long they've owned the home and what the local real estate market has done. Before the bubble burst, many people saw their home values double or more in a very short time. Or someone like my ...

The best way to describe it is that's its an electronic check. The only penalty I'm aware of is if you overdraw your account (similar to bouncing a check). As long as you don't go over what's in your checking account, you're fine.
Like credit cards, some debit cards offer rewards (Perkstreet's cash back comes to mind), but AFAIK, not most.
The only other caution is that if you ...

Those might have been the $5 T-shirts Old Navy has been advertising for at least three weeks now--I guess as sort of a loss leader. They were running primetime network TV ads.
I recently wrote here that I do not generally find the post Christmas sales to be any better than the pre-Christmas sales. Used to be you might find stuff slashed down to 90% off, but now it is mostly half off or 75%...

There was a guy a couple of years ago who, if I remember correctly, set out to trade his way from a paper clip to a house. Through a long series of barter transactions, I believe he did ultimately reach his goal. Perhaps you can do the same thing. Find someone who will give you something of greater value for your penny. Trade/sell that for something of ever greater value and so on.

I use AVG. It is free and I've never had a problem. I know many, many other
people who use it also. I would not spend $75/year for Norton.

when did you mail them? The postal system regularly gets backed up around major holidays (Christmas most especially), so delivery may simply be delayed. I don't know for a certainty, but I also suspect that your standard first-class mail (most letters/small envelopes) takes a backseat in such times so that packages get shipping priority. Give it at least 2 weeks for the system to get untangled...

That's great! A surprise visit back home is always a fun time, regardless of what time of year it is. When I was in college, I know alot of people that were able to just randomly show up at home to surprise friends/family. I hope they both have a wonderful time over the holidays.

I've actually seen just the opposite in recent years. Cards always used to
be good for 2 years, now they are good for 3. The problem is, the cards
don't last that long and I usually end up having to call for a replacement
card because mine wears out or cracks. I figured they did that to save
money.
