Books Online says that you upgrade from Enterprise 2008 to Enterprise or Datascentre 2008. However, you cannot upgrade to Enterprise Evaluation, which is what you are trying to do. I don't know if it is possible to install Enterprise Edition of the Nov CTP. In any case, I would not recommend trying to upgrade an existing instance to a beta version. There is no guarantee that there will be an upgrade path from the CTP to RTM. Signature...

Upgrading sql2000 to sql2005
Published (2009-11-27 17:00:00)
I'm upgrading sql 2000 to sql 2005 before I upgrade GP 9 to GP 10. I ran the sql server 2005 upgrade advisor and the advisor reports that Existing Meta Data Services packages should be moved to SQL Server storage (in the msdb database) or to structured storage files before you upgrade. SQL Server 2005 does not install support for SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services; therefore the Package Migration Wizard will be unable to access...

That is a very generic failure message. To diagnose this, you need to find the SQL 2005 Install error log. Usually it is here: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files SQL 2005 installer logs are very verbose. You may have to get the files from each node and see where the actual failure occurred. Post back logs or log segments if you have further questions. Signature Geoff N. Hiten Principal SQL...

Hi Sosi, There is a possibility for getting this error message due to incorrect date/time settings. What you can try is confirming that the date/time and time zone are set correctly and if not, then set them up accordingly. I am trying to upgrade an existing installation of SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition to the latest SQL Server R2 November CTP and it fails. John, You need to use a cursor to loop thru each database similar to the example below. But you definitely don't want to use dump devices and append as you mentioned. For one that makes it very inflexible in that you can not delete an individual backup, it's all or nothing. You really should look at backing up to individual files instead. Another option would be to just use the maintenance...

Don't use task manager to view the memory usage, use perfmon instead. SQL Server Memory: Total & Target counters. But sql server will only use what it needs. If it doesn't need more than 200 mbs then it wont take it. The Min will keep it from falling below that once it reaches it, it does not start there. The max prevents it from using more than that for the buffer pool. Signature ...

Hi Mike, What is the SQL Server service account specified during your setup? Please try using Local System as the service account and see if this happens again. From the error message, it looks that the service account has not enough permission to start your SQL Server. If this issue persists, please temporarily disable Windows Defender on your Windows Server 2003 and see if it helps. ...

Should we guess the operating system? And other information about the error? You might try removing the component that refers to 0A869A65-8C94-4F7C-A5C7-972D3C8CED9E ... I am not on Windows right now so I can't check, but whatever it refers to can likely be removed by the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
