I never heard of a significant Dubai investment in any of the Scandinavian financials. Are they big players in the UK? I stayed away from UK banks once they hit the skids, except for my under-the-radar play Investec (which is half-UK, half-South Africa plus some Australian ops too).

http://blogs.wsj.com/source/2009/11/26/more-bad-news-for-dubai-investors/ Looks like Dubai World spent alot of money at the top of the CRE over the past couple of years in Europe. Not too much different than what Japan was doing with all of their hard earned money buying US real estate at the top of the market back in the 90's. I still think that Europe is a year behind the US wrt the correction in real estate prices. They can keep...

Could be. The source was Jim Willie so I really don't know, but I do think if they keep spending money they don't have there is trouble ahead somewhere, as with Deficit spending.

Interestingly much of what appeals to westerners about Dubai will likely go in that scenario... Ironic that my wife has a work trip scheduled for Dubai in mid May... Maybe not such a good idea now ...

I am only 40% invested right. I did some sales on Thursday to increase cash. I partly sold out of some utility positions and some bank stocks. Looks like a black Friday sale on the future market. SP500 E-mini down 24 and EM E-Mini down 37 points as I type this.

Here's a couple of reasonable sounding perspectives from the London Telegraph The FTSE 100 suffered its worst one-day fall since March closing down 3.2pc. Companies with big Middle Eastern shareholders led the rout, on the back of concerns that the high-rolling emirate would be forced to sell stakes to raise capital. Barclays Bank tumbled 7.9pc and the London Stock Exchange fell 7.4pc. <snip> ....Property shares fell...

"Dubai debt fears hit world markets hard". Would this headline dampen the appetite for emerging market stocks/bonds that have been hot lately? Wouldn't this be positive for the safe haven currencies such as US$, Yen and the Swiss Franc. No doubt gold will continue it's reign.

All IPOs involve significant underwriting fees. The underwriting doesn't come for free. Recently, companies have amortizing some IPO fees into greater yearly fees, but basically always assume that someone is taking a good chunk off the top. That it is why it is almost always a bad deal to buy a closed-end fund, BDC, or mortgage REIT on the IPO. MC
