Indeed, cannonballs are very very slow. A few other options are making throwing knives (mostly iron if I remember correctly), later on making mith bolts. I also heard a few weeks ago that making pickaxes (perils of ice mountain required) can help cut into your loss. Why don't you just occasionally do some construction, when you feel like it, and then just play the game. Why work to one goal at a time?

Depending on how high you want to get, you should get mith bar supplies and feathers so you can go to the Blast Furnace and make mith bolts with SC hammers in world 58. That way you get smithing and fletching experience and if the price haven't changed you can profit off this method, or lose very little.

Yes, you can get a good drop off a minion while the boss is still alive.

Are you sure you have everything down right? I often make mistakes like that so it might be a good idea to double check it.
