XJR - A Beautiful Lemon
Published (2009-12-23 11:19:00)
Guys, I think I am going to chicken out - I have been looking at buying a 2005 BMW 550i. I drove it and its fantastic, creamy smooth power delivery and lovely dynamics. The problem with the XJR is I cannot afford to maintain it. There is a balance of factory warranty with the BMW and when that expires, it is easy to find oem parts for these cars here. With the XJR I am at the mercy of the dealers who seem intent on making enough money to fund...

You know....I almost posted this link...good job. This is a great comparison. If Jaguar gave the XJR a 5 speed and lowered/stiffened the suspension a bit it might have been a closer race on the track. Stephen 98R powered by Eurotoys

Heck, with a manual trans the Jaguar wouldn't have equaled the M5 but beated it. Interesting that the 0-60mph for both cars was the same, even though the M5 was a manual. Lower torque curve with more torque? Or was the XJR pulling more hp than what was advertised? Or both?

Stephen, (knock on wood) No transmissions issues. It still has the original fluid and filter...I figured "sealed for life" means just that. It always stays in sport mode so that may help lengthen the lifespan of the tranny. I had the tensioners replaced when the head gasket blew back at 95,000 miles as a preventative measure.

Gearbox slips
Published (2009-12-20 16:46:00)
Hi, sparkenzap. In Norway the cost is at least USD 10.000,- to remanufacture this gearbox, so I`ll at least try to adjust the oil level on my own first, and maybe even change the oil/filter once or twice. I hope you are wrong in your predictions - but I have a bad feeling.. I will keep you informed, when I try these things in march/april (parked for the winter..). Thanks for your time! Lars :)

Transmission Fluild Change -- 50K
Published (2009-12-24 02:59:00)
From what I've read it sounds like a good idea to change the transmission fluid around 50K. I don't feel confident doing this myself and thought it would be best to have it done at a dealer. The nearest one to me is Palm Beach Motor Cars in Florida. I wonder if anyone can comment on their experience with the service department there? Thanks

16x7 VDP Lunar wheels

I don't have any, but there are various wheel companies that might have them....here is one...$240 or $210 with exchange. Wheel Collision Jaguar Wheels I have found some Solar 17 inch rims for my car cheaper on EBay. Looked for "Jaguar Lunar" and "Jaguar 16" and did not see any for you at this time. How soon until a code resets by...

Hey folks. 2000 VDP. Wife got a Check Engine Light, and "Restricted Performance" message, so she pulled over and parked it. When I opened the hood, there was a vacuum line disconnected from the top of the valve cover to the air box. It ran pretty rough until I re-attached the disconnected vacuum line, and then everything ran great. Waited 5 minutes with it running, and restricted performance notification went away.... But I still...

That car sounds like a money pit--likely the result of a previous owner who didn't keep up with repairs. Once you start letting things go unrepaired, the trip to the bottom isn't very far. :) Three of your issues are minor, but the others (especially #8) are definitely good reasons to reject the car. 1--the light rattle at idle. Most of the supercharged cars I've seen will make a light rattle, but the sound is actually coming...

Buying a first-model-year car from any brand is asking for problems, especially a high-mileage example... Next time you should do some research before putting your money down.

Lars: I would CHECK the level to be sure its OK. If it is, then don't bother changing the oil- use the $125.00 plus towards a remanufactured transmission. I challenge anyone to report creditable sucess with a fluid change repairing a transmission fault.

Three options: wait until you have done ten start/stop cycles; if no joy, disconnect negative battery terminal for ten minutes or so; failing that, Autozone/PepBoys will generally scan the code for you, and reset, gratis or for a pittance. Cheers!

AFAIK, No. There is no sub out. Above the CD changer there should be an amp bolted on. The subwoofer has its own channel. If you want to to add a subwoofer/amp combo, you should be able to split the line level input to to the amp (and use some RCA style jacks to carry line level to your setup). Now you'll probably want to bridge left & right for a single sub. Your active sub may have ...

Go with a stand alone unit that can be adjusted as needed. My father has done several of these for various cars including the original WCM Ultralite (http://www.wcmultralite.com) powered by a S2000 engine. The ability to tune it as needed is a very big plus and with that engine included adjusting things like when VTEC kicked in. Just re-tuning the ECU is a one shot deal until you re-tune it ...
