I've been reading these BMW boards for five years and the collective experience is that the vast majority of owners do not ever suffer from the massive repair bill you fear. There is quality built into these cars for the most part.

on the e46 board. My interpretation is if you absolutely can't resist doing something to your car, and don't mind taking a risk mucking up your expensive MAF sensor, indulge. But I'd call you on a claim that you'll ever
feel the difference of a couple of HP if you got that.
What are you trying to accomplish?
Same basic comments apply to underdrive pulleys migrating over from the e46 board ...
