Surrey Hills - where to start?

Anyone been out this week and know what the conditions are like? I've missed the last few weeks due to heavy rain and other things. Really want to get out this weekend, but forecast still isn't good. What's recommended for mudbath clothing? GT I-Drive XCR 5 ('09) Tracks | Photos | Twitter

As you leave the bottom of the Beast (heading toward Sheffield) you go through a gate and down a steepish path which meets up with a wide Fireroad by some Forestry work.Follow the Fireroad(the reservoir will be on your left)for just under a mile and follow a double-track path goes off to the right and climbs steeply up into the woods. As it levels out turn right through a gate which follows a rocky path up to another gate.Go through the gate...

Gisburn conditions?

Ben, it'll be on the 10th of January, weather dependant of course. It was rather pretty up there and my five year had plenty of fun making snow angels, just pants for ridding (and digging). It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission. I've bought a new bike....ouch - result Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

Cheers Kenny! Surrey Hills definitely sounds like the better of the 2 options but as it's my first time will try Swinley Forest on 17th Jan and then I know where to go when I'm a bit more confident. Am in West London so are there any other suggestions of places to go?

i planned on going tomorrow as well. site still says they are closed but i have no idea what they are like, drove past forest drive last night and that looked pretty clear. Sadly am relying on mum to take me tomorrow and as such she refuses unless the site says otherwise. Sucks having a car that refuses to hold a charge in the battery longer than an hour. Thankfully shops reopen soon and can get myself a new un! Ride hard, Die harder!

Might be a problem getting there, unsalted roads have still got a lot of snow on them. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

Surrey Hills fo' sho'. Loads of singletrack and more elevation than Swinley. You may not return to Swinley for a while once you have sampled their delights.

I live in Germany, unfortunately nowhere near the Black Forest. If it's anything like where i live, there will be very little in the way of waymarked trails similar to what you get in the UK, they are more like bike touring trails. There will almost definitely be some dedicated dh/fr type stuff though, it's everywhere .

I've not ridden there for 18 months or so, but we always used to park up in Peaslake and go up Holmbury Hill from there. As you're looking at the vilage shop go left down the road and then up a BW on the right and just follow it up to the top to Yoghurt Pots and Telegraph Road, etc. It's all a bit misty, but that's all i've got sorry .
Trails to look out for as well as the above are ...

my partner and I are looking at starting a chalet company next winter but I want to find somewhere that we can offer cycling holidays in the summer.
My first thought was morzine/les gets but this has so many english chalet companys I don't think they need anymore.
Anyone got any ideas?

I averaged about 10mph from the section from Stoke Hammond up through Milton Keynes and Cosgrove.
That section is all surfaced footpath and very easy. No need for detours on most of the route AFAIK except for some tunnels that do not have a tow path but there is a marked route for cyclists / walkers to follow.
I reckon you could do 40 miles / day on a footpath if you cycled for an hour then...
