A new experience...wasn't...

I have a point. \o/ 40 years and I finally say something credible. It's like coming of age. My 1999 was shite. Can't even remember where I was. Wish I had of been out with you guys in the silly snow. Our problem was muddy water leaping out of puddles as we were destorying the 5mm of ice on the top. It is QI that even when the frames are covered in a fine protective layer (TF2)...it is no match for the muddy water + wind combination...

Published (2009-12-21 22:00:00)
hi, i know this has been covered loads of times, but i want to start xc racing and can't find much in my area (north west england). i currently take part in the merida marathon series, and have found races at lee quarry, but on the british cycling website, most of the events for north west england are in the isle of man. does anyone know of a race series in this area/ish or is it just a case of having to travel further. many thanks for...

Ride as hard as you can as often as you can. Work out what events you want to enter and tailor your rides to match the duration, then get very good at pushing yourself until you taste blood and can hardly see for that length of time. Peripheral vision is for the person who comes second. 456 Scott Pompino Inbred WIP

Best tyres

Nic F & R are good all-rounders. Swap the back for a Ralph if it's dry or a thinner Nic/Medusa/Dirty Dan if it's wet. High Roller XC F & Crossmark R is a good 3-season combo. Intense EX/DC very grippy, less expensive than Nics but heavier. Maxxis Advantage good on loose terrain.

Check out Schwalbe Rocket Rons - not cheap, but a great all round tyre. Scott Scale 20 (for xc racing) Gary Fisher HKEK (for commuting)

i did the beast of brecon that was quite enduring. i missed the start by 12 minutes got a bit lost before finding my way, i had the extra motivation of calving through the pack, not sure where i finished (it took 3hrs 38 for me to do the 62km), but i didnt have much power left to attack over the last 15 minutes due to expending too much energy on a certain 'the gap' climb ile be back to do ...

Keep on doing that, and you'll find your fitness levels will shoot through the roof. Nearer the event i'd start to increase your riding time to about 3hrs depending on what enduro you want to do. (Ive never read a training guide and ended up finishing 10th in my category in Ruthin Merida Marathon). Giant XTC SE 2006 Cube LTD Race

So we all know it is cold and are preparing accordingly with layers and wind/water shields...etc Didn't think about the bike much though apart from the ritualistic clean and oil. With these climatic conditions, off road static puddles have the tendancy to be covered in a thin layer of ice, which make a great noise when they are unavoidable. The problem kicks in with the muddy water...
