After 20 years of riding a good old street converted MTB for transportation, I went looking for a nice old road bike. There's only ONE thing I look for: FRAME Everying else is just garnish. I bought a 1974 Carleton built full Reynolds 531 double butted Raleigh touring frame in absolutely pristine condition, and didn't even look at the components. Then I put on exactly the components that I like. Total cost, $1,000... for a lugged...

since i've got 3 functional sets of cantilever brakes hanging around here, would it be feasible to pick up the ol' frame and convert it to a makeshift CX'er? is the frame wide enough to support a wider, knobby tire?

Carraro bike restoration!
Published (2009-12-08 01:32:00)
Thanks a lot fantino for all the help you provided me. I looked at ebay.co.uk and found some nice old colnago's but is pickup only (I live in Greece). I visited some sites like colnago, scapin, etc but they are out of my budget, although the detailing of their steel frames is love at first site . What do you thing of the Specialized Allez steel (it says it has tig welded steel?!?) http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...enuItemId=9256...

Beautiful bike, and I too shared this same bike lust in HS! I've still have the slightly cheaper 1988 Prologue frame (Japan Made Tange Prestige i/o your prospective Columbus SLX) that I got in new sophomore year. Similar Imron paint, but mines red/white fade. My riding buddy had a solid blue 1987 Paramount, full DA. We'd spend all day on those things pretending to be LeMond and Hampsten. ...

The tab needs to be pushed up till the hole lines up with the one on the bottle body. The wire is then poked through there. If you want to make it low maintenance, use twin core speaker wire and wire an earth wire by attaching the ends of the second cable between the bottle fixing bolt and the bolts securing the lights. This stops you relying on the frame for the earth (not much use on non-...

Nice Raleigh. Similar idea to me............. Actually I have some of the last generation Carbon Record kit and thought it wouldn't look to bad on this bike as the black 'n' black would match.
