Sounds like you got a good deal. Post up some pics. Do get a compression an leakdown and track oil usage. Given the detailed records, you are probably good for a while, but keep top end rebuild in the back of your mind.

a leakdown and compression test would get you data on the rings... EDIT: you will need to look past the valves for leakage. Meaning, if you discover significant exhaust valve leakage you want to check carefully for what might be "hiding" behind it and check for leakage past the rings on that cylinder. If you R&R the heads yourself you will need the proper timing tools OR you can convert to the earlier timing...

These parts (distributor goo) are cheap and easy to get to and they control something important. If you don't know how long they have been on, just replace them. There is a replacment holder thingy for the visor (its a big longer than the original one, but it works). Cheapest visit to the dealer. Ever. -reiner

In fact, they were my choice. I've been very happy with them -- easy install and they work nicely. I did not get the 2-piece accel. pedal w/ the heel & toe extension though. I got the 1-piece accel. pedal w/the hight adjustment plate. It allowed me to position height of the accel pedal for easy throttle blips. Very satisfied customer. Also, you can leave out the little rubber "dots" if ...

I just called Becker ( (201) 773-0976). They are selling refurbished CDR 220s for $350. The face plate conversion is another $100. Then shipping. That would put it close to $500. It would have a one year warranty though. You may want to post on the 996 board. Good luck......

Personally I'd take an E39 M5 over a W210 E55. But I'd take a W211 E55 or a W211 E63 over an E60 M5.
