Another music-image moment for me is in "Empire of the Sun", when Jim wanders through the airplanes being welded at twilight, sparks flying everywhere, and he touches the plane, and then the pilots salute him. In fact, that movie has a lot of those moments, like when Jim sees the pilot waving at him in slow-motion during the bombing of the prisoner camp & airfield, and then Jim jumps up and down on the rooftop as the...

For me it was "Patton". I hear the music in my mind and visualize a George C. Scott scene from that movie immediately.

Dune - Riding a herd of sandworms in attack on Arrakis to the city of Arrakeen. Black Stallion - boy rides horse on beach.. oh wait, that's a Nikon moment! bah! ;) The Man from Snowy River - Jim Craig brings in the herd. Superman - Boy becomes man in the ice fortress... Superman flying out. I agree about the ST:TMP.. Other Trek might be ST:TVH when the Bird of Prey stops the whalers, or the grand sequence of Spock's death during the...

This is kid of hard, since sound design and score are one in the end, together with performance dialogue. So I am tempted to say a bunch of movie names based on the goosebump educing themes composed for them Let me start off by saying that ANYTHING that uses "Amazing Grace" makes this list!!! :) I was going to say "Braveheart" but RH beat me to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V84STSWVp3g There is also...

I think that it would be hugely difficult to raise the necessary funds for a 3d movie that is focused on graphic representations of rape and violence. The teenage pop corn munching crowd that generally makes up the 3d audience, I assume, isnt necessarily going to shell out for Last Tango In Paris 3D (without Brando no less.) I don't mean to rain on anyones parade, I just see this as being a very very uphill battle. Also, Im not convinced...

Ketch, a couple of thoughts.
1. I'd like to see the broader scope of this project. I'm trying to see where it's going in terms of story and then of course how the 3D will enhance the storytelling. If it is compelling, I would entertain the possibility of helping. Certainly there is a core group of us that could put together enough tools to get it done.
2. Admittedly, I'm still trying to ...

One of the best ways is to shoot some hand-held footage with motion-tracking targets in it, take it into after effects, track it, then apply the tracking to the shot you want to add a little shake to. Shoot with a similar lens, and it'll give you about the most believable added shake you can get. Of course, you'll have to blow the frame up enough to allow for the motion.

Single Take Steadicam Feature to be Shot on RED
So, we are about to embark on an incredible and challenging cinematic endeavor. A feature I am working on in February is going to do a single take steadicam shot. We will attempt to break the current record, held by the film " Russian Ark", and take the film in around 100 minutes. The ...

I don't know if many of you have seen the film, but it's incredible. At one point in the film, they used a special lens (which they discuss in the special features) but the name of the lens now escapes me. The shot starts up close on a drawing on the girls wall and dollies backwards to reveal the girl sitting on her bed, however the lens creates this " Gulliver's Travels" kind of effect where the ...

Hey David, just a simple question. Any tips or rules of thumb on lighting people with hats like in film noir where everybody is wearing one? Apart from the obvious that the light needs to be low enough, are there any other tricks or useful techniques? Thanks David.

We are using the B2Pro HMI lights at RED ( basically the same as Briese ) with great results.. As the video states the light is like nothing else and B2pro makes quite a few interesting modifiers.
There are a few other companies that are jumping on the parabolic band wagon, Profoto makes a dish for strobes primarily but they also make a 1200 HMI head and pack that uses the same modifiers... ...
