Funny you should mention soffits, and lazy builders doing min. code stuff. I think I have the spacers (sorry, don't know what they are called) every 2 or 3colums up in the attic. Luckily, don't know that I've had any icing issues in the winter but I'll certainly go up and see for sure now that I've seen it when I was up there sorting out some pot lights this summer. Good points.

Hi Limoges_shopper, Thanks for offering your expertise! I recently bought my first home and I have no idea about maintaining a boiler / hot water radiator system (other than bleeding that is). I would like to learn some more about what kind of system I have etc etc. So here are my Questions: 1) Any suggestions on maintenance of the boiler / radiators? 2) Any suggestions on bleeding the rads? - Is there a particular order I should do it? We want to change all the exterior locks on the house.
Can anyone recommend a reputable Locksmith?
(I would do it myself, but I want it done right. However, I am still slightly concerned that I shouldn't allow a Locksmith to swap my locks too.)

There are quality models of A/Cs and furnaces that cost much less. The government rebates are often factored in to push up these prices and many times you can have the units installed for less without getting the rebate.
Keep in mind many furnaces wholesale for $1000-1500 and many A/Cs are less than that. An install takes a day or less for 2 guys and is not overly difficult (unless you ...

Sharp PlasmaCluster - great unit. Definately removes smells.
Unfortunately expensive (all HEPA systems are expensive). However, they do go on sale at Futureshop quite often, maybe 2 - 3 times a year for 30 - 40% off.
Buy the largest unit possible, the largest one only cleans 200 - 350 sq feet!
Update: Lucky you, the FP-P40CX is on sale for 199.99 right now - this is a pretty ...

I would rather negotiate a better rate with the realtor rather then having a token gift.
In general they do.. usually junk like flowers and gift cards which is worthless in the scheme of it all.

Yep and there is even discussion of Costco laminate in this forum.
We did out living room, dining room and hallway earlier this year in the Golden Select from Costco in the walnut. Not a single person that has walked into our house since we put it down can tell it's laminate, they all think it's hardwood. It doesn't "ting" like cheap laminate thanks to the HDF core and has the wood grain ...

So, what's the best way to keep the air quality inside a new home clean and as dust free as possible? I've looked at a Lifebreath TFP coupled with an HRV but the combo costs about $4500 and costs $40/month to run.
What about UV lights? Are they effective or waste of electricity?

High gas bill? First time home owner
Hey guys,
I got my first gas bill, which is for the last two months and it's $88. Is that high? The furnace is less than a year old and I keep the house around 64-67, so it's not really a sauna. I live alone so I don't use that much hot water.
Thanks....

Hi,
I'm looking for a light bulb that's similar to GE Reveal, but I want it in an energy efficient CFL. Is there such a thing?
I hate the 'daylight' type light.

Hi Window guy,
I'm planning to put in some new windows (particularly because there is that rebate from the government). What would be a reasonable installation cost to put in 10 windows in Toronto roughly 44"x44".
I went to home depot yesterday and got a quote of around $320/window for their Farly Vinyl double hung window (material only). I have the guy coming in tomorrow to provide a ...
