There are two classes of remotes, DIYers and Pros. Some companies only do Pros, like RTI, AMX, and Crestron. These are not designed for consumers to program, but they are the most flexible to program and can do almost anything we want them to do. However, that comes at a cost, both money and time to goto training classes. Classes usually last a day just to learn the basics. Other companies offer remotes in both catagories, URC, Pronto, and...

Okay doing more research - is the arrx18g the only remote that will control directv via RF directly? Most only seem to work rf to same branded base stations... Also, seems the 'pro' line of Universals products are more attractive than the consumer line - the mx-980 seems like a possibility (even if we have to lose the touchscreen. I knew I was a noob but didn't know how much of one - the more I learn the further I realize I...

Thanks for the reply kstrange. I spent some time looking at the Harmony website and I came to the same conclusion. I think I will end up getting them the One unless someone can come up with a better solution. Not sure how much I am going to like programming the Harmony (lack of customization) but I guess I won't be the one using it either so I can live with it. And I understand that RF is probably off the table at this price point. Matt

I hope someone else can give you a better idea........but I think this is the way I'd go for the money! Just don't tell anyone that I suggested a Harmony......lol The Harmony One is the only Harmony remote that I've ever liked!

Well that is okay about the web browsing (I do have a laptop on my desk where I watch TV), I just thought maybe that would be one of those 'wow, look at that' things. :) I think backlighting would help to use it in the dark, too you know, not just finding the remote but using it in the dark (I stay up late on weekends and I don't like to have bright lights shining down on me the whole time I'm trying to use...

That was quick! Just got their answer (via their facebook page). They mention that they are the provider of the LAN hardware. Kind of confused me because everything I read talked about IRTrans modules. Anyway, I just saw a November 24 press release on their website that probably answers my confusion, and also that the hardware will be supplied from a US supplier: [Link: tinbert.com ]

I am in the same boat. Why does it seem that the only option for a DIY is the Harmony line? Also, checking many customer reviews, every single remote you mentioned has had some very bad reviews (along with great ones). Before putting down a lot of cash it is hard to decide which one is the best for your money. CNET says the Harmony 900 is the best remote they have ever tested. Pros don't seem to like it. ???? anyhomeneeds: are you being...

Just a question first. Does you budget of $475 include professional programming charges, or just equipment?

Sorry to bring up an old post, but does anyone have an answer to this question? I essentially want the same thing, to be able to teach cheaper Sony remotes (for friends and family members who don't want to spend much money), by using a USB transmitter to send things like discrete codes gleaned from stuff like ccf files. The hardware is not hard to find (the two linked above seem to be the most...

Let's see, you want a color touch screen, the Pronto's are more than you want to spend, you don't like the design of the URC's, and the Nevo's are out b/c you are a DIYer, which will also cut out RTI. Looks like you'll be getting a Harmony for the holidays.

Try a R50 from URC: [Link: universalremote.com ] You won't get web browsing anywhere close to your price range. Also, the backlight feature won't help you find the remote, it shuts off after about 20 seconds.

For the most part yes the R64 will work using code 00749.

I don't like Harmony remotes but the Harmony One is very nice for it's price point. You can find them starting at around $150 and I doubt you'll be able to find another flashy remote for that price. No RF......... Maybe someone else will chime in, but I don't think you're going to be able to find a flashy RF capable remote in this range.

Toshiba TVs tend to be consistent with IR codes, so probably any remote will work. The closest match I could find is a 32AF42, and it is uses the typical Toshiba codes. DVD/VCR combos are more particular, because there is more than one device to control. I recommend that you buy the RCA RCRP05B remote ($25CA at Best Buy). That is a so-called JP1 remote made by Universal Electronics and ...
