Sabotage on the International...

JoeS, my inital guess about the location of "Elwood NY" was just that. The train left Main St and derailed about 5 minutes later. Travelling at 30 mph this is about 2.5 miles. I think this would be somewhat less than the distance from Main St to Sheridan Drive. So your location is probably more accurate than mine. But it was somewhere between Main St. and Tonawanda. Sure seems like some kind of labor dispute ? I never heard...

OK, here's the last one. This is the bridge over the "Little River" in the 1970s. This was also a popular hang-out/swimming place for my brothers and I in the '50s. The international Paper mill along with RT Jones lumber was in full swing on Tonawanda Island in those days and the train used to go over to switch them at least twice a day. There was a bridge tender in attendence full time, but I only ever saw the...

Sabotage on the International...

Wow. I saw that report but didn't read it... very interesting. I wonder if some kind of labor dispute was occurring at the time? Ellwood Park was a settlement at the junction of Englewood, Highland and Belmont Aves. in the town, and was only about 1/2 mile from the ROW. It may be that the RR timetable - in typical RR fashion - had a different name from what the town was actually named. If this is correct then the station probably was in...

I guess we are both right for different time periods. In 1909, there was not a swing over of the Int RR like on your map. It shared the bridge with the Erie and their are no other bridges further east. There must have been some rebuilding after 1909 and the Int built another bridge. Learn something every day!

Apparently there were poles on both sides of the ROW to support the catenary. He and some other friends used to climb up the poles and string a rope between the poles. The next trolley coming down the pike would have it's pole pulled off the catenary and the motorman would have...

Here's a map of the ROME WATERTOWN and OGDENSBURGH RR,there might be a very slight possibility that it ran in to BUFFALO ,NY via trackage rights but I would doubt this.

Genesee Regional Market

Worked at a facility right across East Henrietta Road from the Genesee Regional Market from the late 1960s until the late 1970s. The Penn Central and later ConRail jobs worked the Market a few times a week right up until I left the area. Thanks for the information.

Trash transfers on M&NJ

There were containers on the cars, with tarps over them, on the spur where the Agway used to be. Across Dolson, there were a few with containers on them, plus a few more containers on the loading dock if I recall correctly- hard to know for sure since I was in moving traffic. Definately full containers, though. Also, no more stored cars on the main.

VTM, Thanks for the great information! I hope this post to the Rochester Chapter NRHS's blog will bring back some memories. I had always wanted more details around these images and now we have some. I would welcome other details like names of the people pictured, but we hope everyone enjoys the blog post of images from the Chapter's Harold Caulkins Collection. As I understand it, Mr. Caulkins was a Rochester Chapter member and...

It would be interesting to know if there were other issues going on with the railroad at the time - labor troubles, etc.

The rails are still in place in certain locations. The market is still in use. There are now restaurants, locksmiths, garages, distributors, wholesalers, and other businesses there. I don't have the answer to question 1.

Erie interests formed a railroad called the Buffalo & Cohocton Valley back in the 1850's or thereabouts. This is the Erie line that ran from Avon down through Springwater, Bath, etc., to Painted Post. My theory is that the "Cohocton" that still appears on topo maps is what would have been the B&CV had it ever been completed. Best way to find out for sure is to visit county offices and peruse ...

Word on the street is the train is being used for some sort of Hazmat drill in Cayuga. I am not 100% sure on this or when this will happen but I would assume sometime this weekend.

Sounds like you walked along the tracks and on to the bridge which is not only trespassing on railroad property but also dangerous due to rail traffic.
