Teaching?
Published (2009-11-23 18:44:00)
I'm not a teacher, but a lot of my friends are. My mom is also a retired teacher. The feedback I am getting for my area of the country is to not go into teaching because jobs are virtually non-existent. A couple of my friends who recently got their degrees in teaching, took well over 2 years to find something. (And they have their degree in specialized areas such as math and science). My one friend was a waiter during the time it took him...

It certainly doesn't sound healthy. I think whenever a job is detrimental to your mental health, you should go. But do you have another job? Will you be ok unemployed? Remember that this is your life and you have to worry about yourself. If you've only been doing this for a brief period and it's already making you ill and depressed, it's probably not the best situation. But please don't put yourself in a worse...

I work for a special school that's geared specifically for students with severe developmental disabilities. Our student body represents a wide range of developmental levels, syndromes and diagnoses, but we absolutely have a great many students who are likely similar to the student to whom you have been assigned, from a developmental and behavioral standpoint. My mom has also worked with this population for about twenty years. All our...

Thanks so much guys for the replies, you've been very helpful and supportive. And wordsmith, it really is hard not to take things personally when a child hits you for no apparent reason and to carry on doing your job even though you're not getting results as quickly. I spent all of Friday evening and all of Saturday (yesterday) feeling shocked, depressed and tired as hell and I'm probably being totally perverse and masochistic...

Trouble holding a job...please help
Published (2009-11-24 16:45:00)
I don't really have any suggestions for you but I feel your pain. It can really seem like everyone you know found a job so easily and has a great job/great pay and wtf is wrong with me? Then I read your story and realize there are other people out there in similar situations. I have been out of school for about 5.5 years, been laid off twice, have had to work retail and full-time jobs that didn't pay too much more than minimum. So...

I'm a Financial Analyst; preparing high-level P&L reports and budget forecast for middle and upper management at a bank. I've recently took responsibility to maintain collection of said reports plus others on the company network. The pay is ok, and nothing more. Some might consider it good, but cost of living here is among the highest in the country (top 10%ile, I'd wager), and it's still below the median income for...

Thanks so much for all the links to past talk about teaching. Didn't know I could do a search on that. I have other passions besides teaching so I am not sure if I should look towards other career choices too. All theses forums definitely help to see the reality of teaching.

Trouble holding a job...please help
Published (2009-11-24 16:29:00)
Well the moving thing...I would LOVE to move. But I don't drive (long story) and my parents have always been adamant that I don't have a car until I can pay for it and right now, my paycheck ISN'T enough to cover a car considering it barely covers everything else I am juggling paying for. So I can only move to cities where it is easy to survive without a car. This would be fine, but I also believe in having a job lined up before...

I'm really sorry to hear about your layoff.
I understand how difficult it is to try to find a balance between work that is available/well-paid and work that you personally find interesting. There have been many days that I've wished to go back to school to get training in an area where training is required and jobs are plentiful, and it's true you can find many of these jobs in the medical ...

I've been out of school for a year and a half and since then, I have had three jobs! As if this didn't leave a miserable enough of a mark on my resume, I just struggle in each one and can't seem to get on track.
My first job out of school was a call center. Call centers are so structured and all the structure made me miserable. I believe you need a little structure in a job, but this was ...

Just saw one of my engineer friends on facebook with an INFJ.
I always come up with ISTP. Says I'm a good handyman fix-it person which I'm totally not. Otherwise it's a decent summary of my personality. My company includes Clint Eastwood, Michael Jordan, and Tom Cruise.
I've always wondered though, what do most axe murderers get? I mean all the descriptions make everyone out to be...

I'm a social worker, with a Master's degree and over 10 years of experience in my field. I make on the higher end of what social worker's usually make in my area. I am not posting the amount on this forum for lots of reasons, but mainly, because I am not in the mood for drama and because I have been personally attacked several times on here for not even sharing, but alluding to what I make in ...

I went to school for Tourism and Hospitality Management, but I don't work in the field now. I highly recommend going to school for it if you want a successful career in the field. It's easy to work your way up if you start young and at the bottom, but once you are a little older you will likely need a degree to get into it.

I've never been to Chicago (except the airport) so I can't help you there. I've been to San Diego and loved it the best out of all the cities I have been to in California. I would love to live there. I know the cost of living though is absolutely insane.
I have never been to Atlanta, but have heard great things about it. It especially seems to be a super-affordable area from what I ...

Not being in a field compatible for you can be very draining, especially if you spend the majority of your days there. I know it's easier said then done, but if I was in your shoes I would look into how I could make a serious career change. Also, is being an accountant for say, a non-profit a better option? My SIL does this and still does well financially and has a lot of flexibility with ...
