Welcome to the forum, firstly do you have a memory card fitted to the device? if so its possible the POI files have been loaded to the wrong map folder. If not have you tried Navigate/ To POI and select the arrow lower right to display more categories, do the missing categories get listed if you do this? Finally how many POI categories are you trying to install as there is a limit but its currently over 200 and each category can contain...

Indeed it requires 12v power. It is designed to be plugged in and if it were used in the way you describe then the RIDER's battery would have a very short life.

Yes, that was a new "feature" but my point was that once an issue like this has been pointed out, it then takes forever for it to be corrected, if it ever is.

Thanks for the help. I agree with your sentiments about using your eyes to their fullest extent. My daughter has got me interested in the subject. She has a flash Mercedes with a built in Sat Nav and she uses her phone to get traffic updates. Like you she does not seem to know and does not worry about the phone costs. For a poor old down trodden under funded pensioner like me costs are much more important. (Now I do hope that all of you are...

TomTom 720 hangs at start screen
Published (2009-11-11 19:05:00)
Thanks Andy. 2 moderators out of how many? It sounds like a manufacturing fault to me- after all flash memory usually come with at least a 2 year guarantee. So 17 months protected inside and non-removable is pretty poor. The unit whilst booting and connecting to the computer it takes significantly longer to get going and I think it spends quite some time trying to use the internal memory which is possibly partially failed rather than...

Traffic information
Published (2009-11-12 22:46:00)
I use the GPRS traffic service via bluetooth everyday and find it very good. As I don't pay the bills it's even better. I do also also use Google Maps traffic on my Windows mobile which shows a red or black line for serious traffic delays. The best traffic receiver is your eyes most of the time, as if I see a jam before I join a motorway I go another route.

Yes, when setting up the options for audible warnings for each camera type, you can select TTS and type in your own message. I did this a couple of firmware releases back because the downloadable recorded messages were never the same volume as the navigation instructions. I have stayed with it and much prefer it to the various bongs available in the menu

Afraid not. Maps are locked to a specific device when installed.

Yes, it's perfectly viable. I think the current limit is about 200 POI categories, so with our UK speed camera database you'd have well over 150 categories to play with.
As for model, consider what you want it for - the x40 and x50 have phone capability and various other bells and whistles. The Live models, which includes my XL, have Google search included (subscription after initial free...

The wired receiver known as RDS-TMC has been problematic in terms of getting a reliable signal in parts of the country, this has improved but the data quality isn't too clever from what I have experianced. If you have a car with an Athermic (heat reflective) windscreen then don't bother with one of these receivers as the coating on your screen will kill the FM signals to the point your device ...

Not surprising at the moment - it probably happened because your 940 failed to update the traffic info beyond what it first downloaded when you turned it on. HD traffic is useless at the moment. It's meant to be better and more frequent than TMC. When it doesn't update at all, you'll have to keep switching it off every 5 mins and then back on! I think they should focus a bit less on getting this...

UH OH - just got off the phone from TT tech - they have removed this option for all the x50's (even though the TT website product page for the 950 shows a pic of the 950 with the satellites staus showing in the status bar !)
So now you can't see at a glance how good a satellite fix you have - and it takes 5 stabs at the screen to get that info from the Status & Information page ! For ...

These seem very reasonably priced.
Especially when you compare the price of the existing x40 series on the Tomtom website!
940 - £391.48 (£91.49 difference)
740 - £322.97 (£72.98 difference)
540 - £249.99 (£20.00 difference)
£91.49 between the 940 and 950!
Also, remember, ...

My experience has been quite the contrary. Although Kate struggles with some Welsh place names (which is a source of innocent amusement to my wife and myself) she made a pretty good attempt at most French names during 4 weeks we spent there in the summer. I also use TTS warnings for my PGPSW speed cameras, and my only criticism is that Mobile sounds more like Modile. All in all, the TomTom TTS ...

There is an internal flash drive but no internal sd card as such.
You can dismantle the unit but you won't find a card in there.
Yes, there are those (including a moderator here) who runs everything off an external sdhc drive --- application, map, mp3s, photos, everything.
Just make sure it is a fast reliable sdhc card of at least 4 gigs. _________________ David

Hi yeramihi
A Postcode can cover quite a large area and therefore the device wants to know the house number. If you dont enter a house number just select Anywhere and it will navigate you to somewhere in the postcode area.
