How to shoot better hockey?
Published (2008-12-01 14:58:00)
I think a custom WB would help with the colors a bit. Most hockey shooters I know use the ice to get a WB then adjust to overexpose it a stop or two. The only other alternative for shutter speed would be to go with a faster prime lens or strobes.

Surviving is good, John. But I wish you could say it sent better than that ! How are you finding it after your enforced time off, swinging those lenses?

Well it's was a really tough weekend Paul. The left arm was a bit sore on day 1 with only 2 of the games, my back was another story it hurt! And after the 3 games on Saturday it was so sore I couldn't sit at the computer and go through photos, good thing they weren't needed until Monday afternoon. The drive home was tough too, I had been on my feet since 10am and got to the car at 10:45pm The worst part driving was my right foot...

My daughter is also a softball pitcher. One thing to keep in mind is some of the softball games will be under the lights. Which means a low light situation. Which means you need a faster lens. I was frustrated last summer shooting with a slower zoom lens, as our HS girls always play double headers The first is generally well lit but by the second games the field lights are on and it becomes much harder to shoot with a slow lens. I went with...

Thanks If i am back at Brands next year i plan to get some more from that angle at druids and try the 1st one again. I think it would have been better with another 2 or 3 bikes in the gaps.

Nice shots Lori. Is that the PBOC/Radical Cup? I saw them in the Spring and really enjoyed it.

Sounds like you had your plate pretty full John. Glad you survived that marathon of games and events. Hope to see more outstanding images like the one above. Good to hear from you.

Muddy Rugby

You must have had a blast shooting this. I love rainy and muddy conditions, they make great action. I've shot some rugby, but would love to get out there in the mud capturing the action. Very nice. Jim

with a cheaper zoom lens of with aperture of f4-f5 a "so called slower lens". Do use a longer exposure with so called slower lens in low light "indoors". if so does this decrease your ability to capture 6fps or is 6fps only possible on a lens with a lower aperture indoors.

Hi I have been shooting my kids playing hockey with a Rebel XTi with a Canon 70-200 f2.8. Some are better than others. This example was on Av at 1600 ISO. The Shutter ended up at 1/250. I think I was a couple clicks more exposed. I don't think it looks too bad but I am sure there is lots of room for improvement (I also like it because he saved it!) I have tried lots of different settings...

Well I worked Tuesday night shooting swimming and wrestling. But the real test was Friday and Saturday with the State Football finals at Lucas Oil Stadium. The photo below is one from the finals. All five games were close, no blowouts But the 5A game between the "big" schools was the game of the century as Carmel led 33-14 with 6:04 left. Center Grove moved the ball down the field and scored ...

Well folks, I'll be taking a break from everything for a while, photography and construction. I woke up Thursday and felt lousy, the way I felt I said "flu".... so off to the doc, knowing I am not one to go to the doc to begin with they knew something was wrong when I just walked in the door so they took me right in. After he saw me he sent me for blood work, an hour later I get a phone call ...

I want to purchase a camera for shooting pictures of high school sports, mostly softball. I'm looking at the canon 40D or xsi. I'm leaning towards the 40D because of the faster frames per second. My question what kind of lense. Do I need for getting shots of players from the stands. I want the player to fill most of the picture. Will most of the zoom lenses in the $600 range be fast enough ...
