my speakers are plugged in and they respond when i do the testing sounds, but it will not play music sounds or internet sounds. It will only do test sounds. can any1 help me out?

I want to restore my computer completely, just restart everything. My problem is i have no idea how to do this on vista, especially because my computer (HP Laptop) did not come with any discs, everything was already on the computer. When connected to the router, the highest download speed I could get was ~10kbps... when I plugged her laptop into the router I was getting ~50kbps (both the servers I connected to support much higher download speeds than that).
