Until you hear a final decision from USCIS, you are authorized to stay. Your can keep track of your application if you have the receipt number and get to know as soon as USCIS make a final disposition.

Hi, I dont have experience as you have but i would say, get a client letter that you are the critical resource of the project and without, they will have a loss (if possible) and get photos of the company you work for and get all tax payments w2 and filing documents and have all dates in ur finger tips. This is one of the worst case scenario where you must be prepared for? if you think it will take long time then i will suggest to withdraw your app and go to india to get the L1/L2 stamping, atleast you will be in the comfort of your indian home till you get the stamping. Also it's quite possible in india you may get it without 221g if u have all the reqd docs. good luck.

Your wife need to do H4 to H1 change of status to an H1B employer. If this change of status is approved (means an H1B 1-94 is approved as well), yes she can start working right from the approval date. But if she does not get the change of status approved, she will remain on current H4.
