Electric Radiator Fan Replacement

It really takes only an hour to do the fan. The wires are not in a harness or zip-tied, they are just in hold-downs. Just work your way around the fan shroud. Doug

Oil Filter Drain Tool

Tiptronic question/problem
Published (2009-12-02 17:52:00)
Ask your mechanic what their fill procedure was. They should have topped off the fluid with the engine running, and shifting the transmission through the various gears. If not, it will be low on fluid (as much as a quart). The transmission should not have been too hot when filling, or it will now be low on fluid (but not as low as if they didn't have the engine running). Check for leaks. Ask them what type of fluid they used. The VW...

Water Pump Issues
Published (2009-11-27 17:22:00)
No codes. I have actually had the car for about 5 months before getting around to flushing the coolant. I was afraid to drive it for the fact that if the bearing on the water pump seizes the timing belt could snap and . . . disaster. Right? I guess now that I think about it I haven't really looked to see if the water pump is driven by the actual timing belt or if it's an accessory/serpentine belt.

White smoke at high load is usually soot turning to ash and blowing off the cat
If the power is low it's unburned/atomized fuel going out the back without timing advance. Rotary pumps do this alot.
Otherwise the turbo has puked oil into the cylinders - that will belch out huge clouds ...

You should use the same fluid in the manual tranny (shares with front differential), TorSen differential, and rear differential.
Don't forget the TorSen!
I used Royal Purple 75W-90 GL-4/GL-5 gear oil in my W8 (Tiptronic, so it gets Pentosin ATF1).
Redline is good, as are Castrol and Lubro Molly

on my 01, I did not need to move to the service position to get the fan out but I did have the bumper skin removed (not sure if I had to do this or not). There are several tie-downs to unhook to get the wire harness free. Mine were like zip ties except they can be re-used because there is a lever to release the tie.
I removed the plastic pieces above that obstruct it and the sound shield ...

This is not good. I can only share what I went through when my CV went south. Your symptoms are the same as what I experienced. It turned out to be a bad axle outside CV joint. But I went through 4 sets in 2 months. All were replaced by Firestone on warranty. Three seperate AAA tows. I finally said "Enough!" Screw the warranty and other Firestone perks. I bought two complete Raxel axles and ...

When was the last time you changed the Automatic Transmission Fluid? Ever? If so you should change it pronto. Hopefully your Tiptronic is not on it's last legs.

V6? If so, there is a spot on the tensioner roller for a allen (8mm I believe), put constant pressure on that to compress the tensioner and slide a pin, nail, etc... through the hole to keep it from springing back.

Not sure how you can fix it, but it does not look right to me. I just had help doing my A4 1.8t and the plunger was definitely covered up by that plate.

So If I am imagining this correctly, you want to cut out a section and weld it back together? No way. Then what about the rear?

Yeah; a lot of people. You're right in that you need a new valve cover gasket, and probably a new cam chain tensioner seal (at the rear).
But if you have multiple...
