My 1999 B5 Sedan problems thread
Published (2009-11-09 19:16:00)
Hey, thanks. Quick question, I took the throttle off. It looked fairly clean, but I noticed that if I tried to push it closed all the way, it would spring back a little bit. Is this normal or should I try fixing it?

Aftermarket (metal) regulator...

My original plastic clips started failing at about 10 years of age. If the replacements last that long, they may outlive the rest of the car. FYI: The front window clips are different from the back window clip. Have you opened up the back doors to see what broke? The back window glass is retained into the clip by a plastic dowel. Sometimes the dowel pops out (from years of door slamming) and falls to the bottom of the door. If you're...

make sure you work on a cold engine and have a little G12 coolant to top off with. Write up: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng66.shtml This is on an older AWM, but will work.

I've updated my CP information - actually I'm in NYC, not really convenient to Haverstraw but worth the trip for big repairs. I'm going to check oil level when driving tomorrow.

^^ the oil pressure light/warning beep will only activate at 2k rpm or greater, if I understand correctly, so never at idle.

Passat 2.8 30v timing belt problem
Published (2009-11-11 09:22:00)
Same thing happened to me (and a few others). What happens is that the balls ride up the belt like they are on a conveyor. When they reach the right side sprocket they cause the belt to jump. If your engine idled reasonably normal before disassembly, you should be okay; lucky, but okay. Mine skipped a few teeth and the ECU reported an improbable signal from the cam sensor. If you are due for a belt, change everything. If not, change the roller...

I was scareed of that to, but I did a plug and play installation and have had zero issues ever, just go with a reliable HID brand and you will be good to go.

I know the manual is a swap. A little tight around the emergency brake handle, but it fits.

It's either the sensor or wiring connections, here's what I found:

Difficulties with starting a cold engine.
Starting the engine when engine is warmish or warm, idle rpm immediately is 1200 - 3000 rpm.

I don't know about the B5 but for my 5.5 I tried Valeo wipers and was not impressed. In cooler temperatures the rubber starts to chatter on the windshield. They also aren't as pliable as the OEM and don't fully conform to the contour of the windshield leaving a streak on the passenger side untouched. The OEM wipers are much better and you can get them from many of the online retailers such as ...

if you do not paint it the black part will show as the caps do not cover the whole side

Hey there... Not sure what to suggest on the switch... 98s and 99s had a lot of issues with the sunroof switch. The contacts/rheostat would get dirty and cause the sunroof to open and close somewhat sporatically without you even touching it. So maybe the previous owner was trying to fix that issue and broke the knob... Anyhow, from your picture I can't tell if you even have the entire switch ...

Have you taken off the valve cover to check for sludge? It's possible that the oil passages are restricted, making it difficult for any oil that does get up top to find it's way back down to the oil pan again.

Seems a bit long to have the oil reach the lifters on the head. 10w40 might be to thick. The thicker oil does not alway mean better. Lighter oil lubricates just as well but is easier to get around the engine and quickly. Saves gas also. With the winter coming I would go for the lighter oil.

the only place I've used it is on the surface of the hat (sparingly) where the wheel meets it. I've never had a problem with a rotor that seized to the hub - they all seem to come off with a couple of strategic whacks with a hammer.
the wheel, however, sure seems to like to "fuse" itself to the rotor hat...

Just an FYI to this issue, I went into Strong VW in Salt Lake City this morning to have a new key programmed and when they gave me my car back, they said there was an open recall on the ignition coils so they replaced all 4, free of charge. Didn't ask, didn't know about this. So I looked it up when I got to work and saw this post. So go in and get your coils replaced.

Is it a mechanical sounding clicking or is it more of a solenoid clicking? Is the CEL on (O.K. Noob - CEL = check engine light).
Does it at all sound like an exhaust manifold leak?
Is it duplicateable with the car in neutral, PB on then rev engine?
Welcome aboard by the way. YOu probably have - strike that - you definitely have an AEB engine code 1.8T. Good engine, better head....
