Yeah I heard of that movie Bean Thanks for reminding me. I can only imagine what it was like seeing a German on such occasion like there was no war at all. Like you said very different during WWII.

This movie is from 1970 and stars Rod Sieger as Napoleon Boneparte. The special effects and shots of the generals riding into battle on horses were pretty lame. The actors appeared to be on a rocking horse with the action on a screen behind them. The thing I liked about the movie were the battle scenes using 20,000 extras. They were on a grand scale and really gave you the sense of "the fog of war". Once the action started...

The German military and it's leadership was a lot more civilized in WWI than later in WWII. Then, there's this movie, as well:

I have read that "The Longest Day" was made with national units-, British, US, French and German- the actors who appeared in the latter two segments were well know to their national audiences and some of the German actors had already played the generals they portrayed, thus keeping visual continuity. Also because West Germany was an important part of NATO then the Germans were portrayed somewhat more sympathetically.
