Have you taken the bolt completely apart and cleaned it? That could be the source of the stiffness as it could be filled with caked cosmoline and crud from storage. Most springs are not stiff by milsurp standards although if you are mesuring them by commercial rifle standards they could be considered stiff and hard to operate. If you are wanting slick and smooth then I would say you are barking up the wrong tree in a milsurp rifle at least a...

If you can't find one locally and object to dealing with WGA, SOG, Southern Ohio Gun, also has M39s of various types for sale. Carl

One side was for oil and the other side was for an alkaline solution, or more commonly referred to here as solvent. I had to boil those containers out in soapy water several times to get rid of the foul smell they had in them from decomposed oil and solvent. What side is what, I forget now. Curt

About the only thing on mine that looks like anything off a 91/30 is the bolt and sights. It has a thick spliced stock, heaver barrel/receiver. over all weight heaver than 91/30's. Some one just messed it up by refinishing the stock. But it still looks and shoots good, all matching. I know they are not original but it came with dog colliers and canvas sling. I am satisfied for $149.00 two years ago. shotout

Thanks everybody. M1, you are right in that it gives you a creepy feeling. Makes me wonder where it has been, how many Germans did it take, what happened to the guy it was issued to, etc. It's all part of it's history but I know there is no way to trace it. Still very interesting to me and I bet the guy who carried it before me had no idea where it would end up or be used for.

Heat would not harm the blueing. Just get some paint thinner or mineral spirits then take the barreled action and place it in a bucket with some mineral spirits or thinner in the bucket. Then just use a cleaning rod to pull the thinner or MS up the barrel changing the solvent as needed. Then dry it out or just use the same solvent I mentioned and soak a few patches and run through the bore. Takes time but will leave a clean bore. Afterwards...

MN 91/30 Tool Question ?!?
Published (2009-12-07 20:29:06)
That nut (actually a recoil bolt) won't stop you from taking the action out of the stock. Just take the handguard off by first removing the two barrel bands. Then there then just two screws, one on the receiver tang and another undernreath on the forward edge of the magazine housing. When you have those two out, the magazine housing, the stock and the barreled action will seperate (sometimes not easily). The only big pitfalls are that the...

Hard to say if any of our rifles were involved combat, cept those that have obvious battle damage - Bullet scars/grooves in the barreled action - Shrapnel in the stock, ect. I do think it is safe to say that many of those war year produced Soviet Mosins were issued. Those in dandy shape were most likely taken care of better than others. This 1941 dated MN was used by two armies.....both enemies at the time.... Pahtu.

Welcome to the C&R and Military Surplus Firearms forums. I think you will find the M38 a great little military carbine in it's original form. We tend to frown and avoid any mention of modifying and sporterizing our weapons here and I would recommend you read the forum rules closely before you think we might be a good source of what you are looking for and proposing doing. The M38's saw a lot ...

Ok I got to take them apart awhile ago and the 28/30 is actually a 1940 Sako Sky in a 1940 Civil Guard marked stock. It has an aluminum sleeve to float the barrel and the bolt is miss matched to the receiver which is an 1899 Tula marked unit. Bore is indeed nice and the entire rifle is coated in that black grease the Finn's loved so much they applied it to everything! The rifle is Tennessee Guns...

That is about the only way to get it short of the electro-cleaning method, or even the "Shoot & Scrub" technique. I've applied all of them in some bad bore cases in an attempt to get the bores cleaned out. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

M39 are arsenal refinished - many have been built late in the war or after the war and have never seen action. Some are even unissuede. For $300 they are a steal and if you get one - get one in vg+ condition. Before I would get a "worn" M39 (as a shooter, not for the markings!)I would get an excl. Finnish M30 (91/30) with a Tikka barrel. They run a lot less then the M39 (for now) - and they are ...

I have no way of verifying it, but I have been under the assumption that any Mosin Nagant rifle with a 1942 date on it surely saw combat. The Russians at the time could not keep up with demand for rifles, and even some troups were sent into battle without a rifle and were told to pick up a rifle off a fallen comrad. I have a couple 91/30's from that vintage and I actually get a creepy feeling ...

I got one, the biggest one, and it's excellent. I've ordered one for my brother, too. I'm amazed at the number of products 7.62 x 54r net has for sale. I can only assume that there is no real stock on hand and given current technology they are printed and bound on an "as needed" basis. We should do everything possible to support the operator of the 7.62 x 54r net website. Carl
