a good root canal usually costs an arm and a leg only.

Depends on the dentist, but I'm guessing this isn't something where you want to go with the absolute lowest bidder.

I went to Jang and ASSociates. It was only $900 but they didn't put in a real filling and didn't tell me not to bit hard on that side until it's capped. Now i get to spend 4,000 to 5,000 to replace the split tooth. Awesome! Go to a real endodontist specialist like http://www.yelp.com/bi... and spend $1300  - $1,400 and get it done right the 1st time.

When I got mine done in 2006, it was around $2000 (with dental insurance coverage). I hear it could be cheaper when it's totally out of pocket.

No, that's about right without insurance. Root canals on a molar are about 1k-1500. Front teeth maybe 1k. Porcelain crowns with high noble metal underneath for molars are 1k, metal free full porcelain crowns for front teeth 1500. Remember dentists assume they are charging insurance for most people so the rates are set high as such, but they don't reduce them for self pays.

I got one about a year or two ago. I think I ended up paying about $1000 or $1300 after insurance. I work for a small company though and don't have great insurance and I wasn't going to the best place.. I actually need a new dentist recommendation if anyone has one :) I just looked up my old dentist on Yelp and see he only has 1 review of 1 star.. I didn't think he was that bad, but maybe he was.

I've paid a dentist $700 and he did a real shoddy job. I ended up having to get it redone. Earlier this summer I was in dental hell as I'd cracked the majority of my left side upper teeth due to grinding at night and got myself infections and root canals. It wasn't fun. All about right. I recently paid an endodontist $1200 for a root canal on a molar.  The crown was an additional $1100.
