Hi, I want to get a new smaller Notebook so my 3 year old Dell Inspiron 6000 (2.1 processor, 2GB ram) is going to be spare. As it`s not worth much I might as well keep it and was thinking about getting a version of Linux running on it, rather than installing it into a Virtual MAchine. I`ve used Linux before and used Unix also and will be good to keep it as a skill. So what is a good version ...

I've got a dual install of XP and Ubuntu on my work lappy and I quite prefer using Ubuntu as it isn't affected by group policy and wotnot + has more useful network troubleshooting tools than XP. I reckon I can get away with most stuff using samba and RDP the only drawback is our helpdesk solution runs in ASP and renders like a pile of disorganised s*** in firefox. Under XP this was remedied by ...

This is a bit of a Windows and a bit of a Linux question. I suspect you Linux guys will be better at answering it though I've just got myself a lovely Asus eee 1000h with a 160GB Sata drive. I've got Windows XP that it came with on it at the moment. Going to leave that on there "incase", it's not like I'm overly tight on hard drive space. I'm going to put Ubuntu (eee edition as I...

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...xfi_gift&nu m=1 "The Sound Blaster X-Fi sound card driver for Linux from Creative Labs was awful. That's simply the nicest way to put it. The driver was home to many bugs, initially only supported 64-bit Linux, and it was arriving extremely late. Has anyone tried the preview release yet? Only a few more weeks until the final release.... After having loads of hassle with Ubuntu, I might give Fedora a go again

Debian installed without any hitch, however the acpi modules for cpufreq won't load, do the cpu stays at 1.6Ghz, and the fan stays on... I'm using 2.6.27-1 so far. I have a nasty feeling I'm going to have to roll my own kernel :/ Anyone else using that cpu, or the atom in general ? (eeepc etc)

Why doesn't all Linux software appear there? I tried typing in VMWare earlier, to install Workstation, and it wasn't there? I then tried the d/l from the VM site and it's an RPM which my package manager doesn't recognise. Help!

Hello. You'll have to bare with me with this problem, I'm a complete n00b when it comes to Linux. But this might be the only way to save my data. Woke up this morning and couldn't boot into Windows, kept saying it was unable to read from the disc. So I tried a Ubuntu LiveCD tonight, but the Windows drive was showing up as an SCSI drive (whatever that is). So I installed Ubuntu onto a ...
