You don't need anything powerful with the correct GPU/IGP as the decoding will be offloaded to this. So all you need at the minimum is an ION machine (Atom+nVidia 9300). Acer and ASRock but very cheap dual core ION systems which will play everything. If you go the DIY ION route or C2D+9300 board you'll be spending a lot more. Do note that nVidia GPU's decoding is far more compatible than ATi.

If the 3 RCA jacks are red, white and yellow then you should be able to connect the 3.5mm output of the laptop to the red and white ones. This should work (its how we have ours set up in the office) but it might be that the audio will only work if you have it set to composite in (if the TV is crap?) or you might have to dig through the menus. I appreciate that you're colourblind so just...

yes - PS3 is very good Blu Ray player and much more. PS3 is great quality BDP with regular firmware updates, especially now that the slim can bitstream HD audio (in your case is not important anyway). You would have to spend much more to see/hear a difference, provided you have the AV stuff that would actually benefit. It actually makes me laugh when i hear people spend more on their Blu Ray ...

SPDIF is not a "Jitter" free interface, so different units CAN effect the performance depending on how good they are. It's a bit relative though as depending on the mating equipment will depend how noticeable this is.

cold cathode tubes are what they use in pc's. you can probably get kits that plug straight into the mains with the inverder for it built it. or could look for led strips, just a long bit of plastic with lots of led's along it, again probably just get a power adapter and plug it into the mains i also will be doing this once i get my cabinet

AFAIK the first few generations of sky+ had component outputs, more recent ones (last 2yrs) only carry the scart out. The First HD boxes did and i assume they still do. Sky's picture over scart can still look very good, you just need to ensure you have changed the picture from PAL to RGB for the best image.
