Behind the curve, need a new rig

I like the i5 setup better personally...i5 even without the HT is still much faster at identical clock speeds (the same or a hair slower at stock) and just as overclockable as the AMD chip. Cant go wrong with either, but if you can afford the extra coin (like you said you had the budget for) i5 would be my route personally.

+1 to getting the i5 if you can... it beats even the AMD Phenom II 965BE in pretty much every benchmark. Thats when its @ 2.66GHz... overclocked it's will absolutely destroy anything AMD can throw at it.

well you wont find a good bundle on a tv AND a pc in the same deal.. I havent been to canada in a long time, but with the holidays around most local electronics stores (best buy and the like) usually have some decent deals. Should be able to find a decent 42" for 1200 area (plasma better black and sometimes cheaper, LED/LCD are next, then normal LCD) I paid like 1900 for a 46 samsung LCD 240mhz tv about 6 months ago.. so a 42 should...

I would probably go plasma over LCD. Plasmas are cheaper and have better blacks, which leads to better colors than LCD. Plasmas are heavier and use more power though. I just checked BestBuy (I like getting TVs from there) they have 42" 1080p Panasonic plasmas for ~$800. The good LCDs (42" 1080p 120Hz) at BestBuy are more expensive $900-$1100. I've been so tempted by Samsung's 40" LED lately, and it's...

No nothing detected. I tried ide mode, raid mode, with and without the jumper, auto detect repeatedly.... I think the pci to sata2 card is the best best since newegg will charge a restock fee plus shipping anyhow so I may as well spend that loss on something to make the better drive work. I found a few on newegg for under $20 that say they work with linux.

Tonite I'm going to drop a 7600GT, a PC Power & Cooling, and my old school 74GB raptor with XP, into the box. The 7600GT and raptor are of course temporary, but the other 50% of the build is currently in use by my E5300/UD3P setup. When I finish the program I'm working on, it's full steam ahead. I got a 4 day weekend starting when I get out of work today, so it'll happen eventually. I'll try to get...

I was just browsing thru the updated Anandtech budget system guide http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=286 1 and I realized that I don't have suggestions for a monitor, speakers, keyboard, or mouse. I think that these things are really user preference and definitely don't have an effect on overclocking, but I also think that I could highlight one product in each of those categories,...

The story behind the ram is actually quite cool.
I was at a lan party here in Omaha, and a fellow gamer won this kit of ram, sort of. He won a blue set, but he had no need for ddr3 ever, he said, and I had no need for the ddr2 I had won since I already had 8GB, but seeing as how I would eventually go to a platform with ddr3 it made sense for us to trade.
So 3 of the sticks ...

Could be a decent paper weight... if you have some chain, and a boat = new boat anchor I just dont like Dells... notorious for leaky capacitors and a lot of other issues like horrible PSU's.
Kidding aside, max it out with some cheap RAM (make it useable), reformat the HDD and install everything fresh to your liking. Use it for a backup or a different system to test stuff on ...

There are a few changes I would make to various parts you've chosen...
What is you budget for the build...
On a side note... You may possibly live near a microcenter store... you can get the i5 there for $150 (im from UK so I don't know the distance but there are 2 in texas)

There should be a spot to add a jumper on the drive to limit to SATA1 drive. Most boards should be able to handle it by themselves, but some cheap board need the drive to specifically tell them to work. See jumper setting 4. Also, Google tells me there may be an IRQ or some such issue with Radeon graphics cards and that hard drive.

You'll need 8 different parts;
Motherboard (mobo)
CPU
Video Card (GPU, VGA)
Memory (RAM)
Hard Drive (internal/external)
Case
Power Supply (PSU)
CD/DVD/Blu-Ray/Floppy Drive(s)
And of course some extras when you choose to upgrade (fans, extra hard drives, and such) but that's later down the road.
I'd say to start, on a $600 (American, I'm presuming) budget, ...

The motherboard in the combo you linked only has 1 PCIe x16, so no Xfire on that board.
Do you need 1TB of space? If not, the WD Caviar Black 640GB HDDs are, in my opinion, the best 7200RPM HDDs.

So what's your total thus far?
You don't need a Xfire bridge, they come with the cards, so you'll have 2.
Depending on your total and if you want to minimize cost, the WD Caviar Black 2TB or WD RE4 would probably be better 2TB drives, but they cost ~$300 each...

Which OS are you running, and did the OS install the drivers for you, or did you install them manually? And is the printer connected via parallel port or USB port?
