The lower heatsink with the asus logo is the chipset, and you need cooling on it.
You could get an aftermarket chipset cooler for it, there are
low profile ones from zalman for example, pure copper from enzotech, and thermalright's sli could be a tower solution which still fits due to it's design.

To be honest, you will get the best results from having well planned airflow, rather than more. There will be a point that you are not gaining anything by adding faster fans, except for noise. Also, keeping your airflow somewhat balanced can be helpful. I prefer to use a little
positive pressure (2 intake fans on my Antec 900 are on high, 200mm exhaust fan on high and rear 120mm ...

Your
backplate probably shorted something. You sure the CPU was inserted properly? Take the CPU out and inspect the pins.
My guess is your new backplate shorted something. Why didn't you take the Mobo out all the way like normal and mount the cooler?
The Mobo could be dead now. Go back to your original cooling setup and try again.

Not by a huge amount to be honest - mostly idle temps are lower, prime95
torture test seems to give the same temp

I recommend
Arctic Cooling MX-2 or MX-3. Typically about a degree lower than AS5 and no curing time.
