Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, with its terraced farmed shores, it is the largest lake on Earth located at more altitude, 4.000 meters above sea level. Here as well as on numerous other places in the Andes mountains, various cultures flourished and disapeared during more than 2.900 years (1.400 B.C to 1.532 A.C.)

In the Banaue rice terraces in the Philippines, the irrigation system diverts water from rivers and streams, and channels these to the terraces through a series of dikes and pipes. ---quote--- The pipes is made of bamboo of various diameters, which make sure only the right amount of water is channeled to the terraces, and that no soil erosion is caused by excessive water flow. At the upper point of most terraces are well-preserved...

Published (2009-11-19 14:18:00)
Miles per hour is a velocity, while pounds is (strictly speaking) mass. So the simple answer to your question is, no. Having said that, http://www.knmi.nl/samenw/hydra/faq/press.html provides a formula to translate wind speed to pressure: - quote - Pressure = ½ x (density of air) x (wind speed)^2 x (shape factor) * The density of air is about 1.25 kg/m^3. * The shape factor (drag coefficient) depends on the shape of the body. It has order of...

Published (2009-11-19 23:19:00)
OK, I now have a rough estimate. Very rough. There are about 33 million Common Wombats. I arrived at that figure by taking the number of square miles in Tasmania, converting it to hectares, multiplying by the middle number of wombats per hectare (0.4), and multiplying that by 5 as an estimate of the Australian area with wombats on that map. This number could be off because of a number of factors, but, it is a reasonable number. There are about...

The force required to lift a mass M with an acceleration of 0.6 m/s/s is M x (9.8 + 0.6) = M x 10.4. In (a) the total mass lifted is 6500kg + 1200kg = 7700kg, so the force exerted by the air on the rotors is 80080 N. For (b), the tension provides the force on the 1200kg car, so the tension in the cable is 1200 x 10.4 = 12480N....
