Slow loading of writer files
Published (2009-11-26 11:10:00)
Mystery solved, though I don't know why. I reloaded OO 3.1 and my laptop now performs as well as the desktop. I have no idea why it took 10 seconds to load a file that now takes 1. In any event, I can not use it for my novel without having to worry about wine crashing or mucking with a virtual box guest.

Remove box around text?
Published (2009-11-24 13:59:00)
Hi JohnV, Your advice is good. Thank You. I just had the sequence wrong. Should have used the usual CTL C to capture the info. THEN, at the destination, use Edit & Paste Special as you advised. Variation on the question: Can I capture info with a CTL C while in my CompuServe email program (or elsewhere) and then add / append it to a Writer .odt file without going to the .odt file and opening it? I liked the way I could do that back in...

Problem Upgrading OpenOffice
Published (2009-11-23 13:50:00)
You've answered my question perfectly. In the past I've had problems with downloading the latest software over a previous version and had to uninstall the program than do a fresh install. Thanks again.

Import PDF files?
Published (2009-11-26 09:10:00)
Good point. I never intended to buy any PDF viewer. All I wanted to do is view them with Oo. I got Acrobat. That's good enough for now. Ubuntu 9.10

No Linebreak betweek Category...

This doesn't really help because then it just inserts white spaces between the tab fill characters (in the example of my previous post = dots) and the page number. The Problem is that the Entry (F) is not split up into the description and the number. i.e. element F contains the whole text: "Illustration14". That's why I cannot put white spaces in between. Do you think there is a solution? cheers!

I've got a snapshot of the screen that I describe but can't figure out how to post it.

Address labels
Published (2009-11-27 07:30:00)
Thanks for your reply. I think perhaps I didn't register my spreadsheet???, Anyway, I've created a database from my spreadsheet, and followed the instructions for Printing Labels, but when I print it prints the field headings, not my data. What am I doing wrong, please? norm

You will probably be best installing the extension AltSearch to do this in Writer.

It looks like you have a header for the the entire document. You need to create a new page style without the header and insert a new first page, then insert a new manual page break and apply the page style you are currently using.

At Tools > Outline Numbering select say Level 9 and make sure no numbering type is assigned then use the Heading 9 style for such items. (Optional â edit Heading 9 style to match Heading 1 in appearance.)
In the TOC dialog click the Styles tab, on the right select Content 1, on the left select Level 9 and click the < button.

I can't replicate this. I insert a picture, right click > Caption which gives me Illustration 1.
When I do Insert > Cross-reference I select Illustration, Illustration 1 and Category & Number. The result is a single field with no break.

Do you have a similar problem when you are opening OpenDocument files? I think that importing a foreign file format will not be as fast as when you use the native format that the program optimized to use.
If you have the most recent version of Microsoft Word with all the updates, you can actually use OpenDocument files. If you have a current or older version of the Microsoft Office suite...

Quote: because next time I go in it doesn't show. If this means in a new document then it's because you only changed the style in the prior document.

After a toolbar pops up, go to View>Toolbars>(that toolbar name). That will close the toolbar, and it will not reappear until you specifically enable it again with the same command.
You can then create a custom toolbar with the buttons you want to be visible, or put the buttons you want onto the existing toolbars.
