I would not be surprised if you have to remove the sail panels, which might require removeing the interior window/door trim. Before you know it half the interior is removed because of how they overlap those window/door trim pieces. Something I realy dont like about how they put these things together. I'd rather have exposed screw heads any day than all the snap in plastic clip stuff, which always seems to suffer somewhere on disassembly....

To restore or sell a 88 Toronado?
Published (2010-01-03 19:46:00)
Probably just go ahead and sell the car. Although the dash works now it apprears like there is too much to do. I don't think it is or will be become a collectable car and even if it did there is a lot of money and years that would have to be put into it to get it to that point. Athough I think all new cars, truck & SUV's that made today are the uglyest things that I have seen (including American and imports) I guess I will...

Is there any other engines that will bolt up to the toronado and its fwd 400 type transmission. Can I look for maybe even a smaller cubic inch B O P or a 455 if the price is right. Souds like a weekend or two of labor might be worth throwing another engine in there. To put a 425 back in there is out of budget. A car is a car at this point in my life and I like the car! Whatcha think?

I Was Told From Nummerous People The Engines In These Cars Were Put In Dune Buggies , Air Boats , 442s And Any Other Thing U Can Think Of , When You Consider Nothing Else Would Bolt Up To The Toro They Had To Be Junked ,so How Could There Be Many Of These 70s Left When You Have Rust Issues And 40 = Years , Also Im Finding A Lot Of 1966 Toro And Almost No 70s , So Ithink The 70 Is Where To Invest In The 1st Generation, I Had A Sts Caddy For...

Thank you. That's the best answers yet! No access from the trunk unfortunately. I wish there was, it would be a whole lot easier. The seat I know must come out. I have had it out before, the bottom anyway. The back is just a couple bolts and it's out. The shelf may come without pulling the sail panels, I just need the seat out completely too verify this. I was hoping someone had some pointers. I know the Caddy Eldorado and the Buick...

I am assuming you are talking about the speedometer instrument cluster. If you really like the car and the cost of the dash is the problem, it's not the $1000 you refer to but $169 at this site: www.mrwhizard.com Mark

OK, first there probably just isnt alot of people if any with that generation of Toronado here Nor do I have that car but I work on mine which are many all the time and I just use the process of elimination. 1. Is there access from the trunk ? 2. or do I have to go in from the shelf ? 3. If so I know I need to remove the bottom seat by pushing down and back and lifting at the same ...

It could take you along time to sell off bits and pieces and "get your money back". Sounds like you had a pretty decent piece until you wrecked the engine. What exactly did you do to it?

70's are cool, they had that neat front bumper and nice flares at the wheels. I did notice back 8 or so years ago when I was always checking what was for sale that there were fewer 70's. Maybe sales were slower in 70 ? Thats all I ever looked in Hemmings for was 66-67 and 70's, the 68&69 doesnt float my boat so much but their OK too, I have seen a few real nice ones at car shows. BTW - Whats...

Well you didnt give much information as to how much "restoring" it needs, the miles, pictures, ect. Yes the electronics can be hard to find. At this point Olds being dropped from GM's line has no effect on parts as manufacturers have little parts available for cars from that period anymore anyhow. As far as the powertrain (eng/trans) they were used in many models and all of those electronical ...

Im not fimiliar with that DIC (driver information center) but I am with the engine. Is this at idle or at driving speeds ? How much does it vary between idle and driving speed ? Eitherway it should be fine, those engines have a darn good oil pump system. Keep your oil and filter changed. They use a small filter and it will plug the element full of particles and hit the bypass if you push your oil...

Anythings possible. Why not go whole hog and put the Toronado body on a '73 to '80 Chevy pickup chassis with full time 4 wheel drive. This is on the assumption you have UNLIMITED funds to throw at the project. If you're looking to buy a kit for a few hundred dollars that makes a simple job of it, forget it. Realistically, all you'd do either way is butcher up and destroy a nice old...

My brother-in-law just sent me an email listing the items in an auction that includes a 66 Toronado with 57,300 miles. There are pictures of it in the Sale Bill which you can download from the site. I think I saw this driving around town when I was up there for Thanksgiving. It was so nice to see a Gen I out cruising. Looks pretty nice. Sorry it's short notice, but I just got it....
