We just went thru this with a 99 Bravada. A mechanic friend said to hit the bottom of the gas tank (I used a rubber mallet) while someone is trying to start the car (don't get under the car). I had to tap it fairly hard, but it started and we drove it to the shop he works at. Be forewarned that if you turn if off, it might not start again. And don't hit the gas tank too hard, you do not want to bust a hole in it. Oh, it cost about...

We had the exact same sound and symptoms last week. A gear-like whirring sound, then no reverse. We had the transmission rebuilt and it's like new this week. We only got 92k out of the trans, but the car was in too good shape not to repair it.

It sounds like your AWD drive is permanently engaged and not dis-engaging.

Yes, there is a flasher unit just to the left of your lighter & ashtray. It requires the removal of the lower part of your dash next to your steering column just there should be two round type flasher units there. I believe one of them will be the one that you are looking for. Hope this helps, good luck!! its not too hard to get to.
