502 piston size
Published (2009-11-25 01:13:00)
You need to be sure about that piston clearance. The piston will be smaller than the 4.466 bore size. The cylinder clearance is built into the piston. You should measure the piston 1/2" above the bottom of the skirt. Service limit on those pistons is only about .005. Meaning, if you have more than .005 clearance, you need to bore and go to 4.500. Those pistons have a high silicone content and are designed to run fairly tight. They...

525SC is a 454 with a 177 blower and 1050 Dominator carb and Gil exhaust except the last couple years had CMI headers. 490 HP at the prop. Yes, the are quite a bit thirstier than a 502mag. They are very good engines. They do need 92 octane fuel. 325hrs???? It really depends on how it was maintained. It could be fine and could need some work. Salt or Fresh water??? The intakes do not like salt and they are very hard to find used. They...

Published (2009-11-25 10:07:00)
I must be missing something, otherwise, it seems there would be some opinion, for or against using Compacted Graphite Blocks. Assuming CGI up-charge is only $1,000.00 over Grey Iron, that is somewhat insignificant. That is, if there are durability and mantainance advantages. Some show preference for a "used" grey iron block over new. Reason, the aged block has cycled through heating and cooling long enough that it has taken...

I love mine.......had a little over 300 trouble free hrs at the end of last season and did a complete overhaul this winter. When we opened them up they were in pretty good shape and could have gone a bit more, but I like to be on top of stuff before it blows, Season here in NY is to short to lose a engine over the summer. If you do find something you like that has 575sci's I would always get a ...

I was in a friends single engine boat when something similar happened. We were cruising at about 50 when it shut off. Didn't make a sound, it was like you shut the key off. When we found no spark, we assumed an ignition problem and got towed in. Turns out there was no spark due to the distributor not turning - the chain was broke. It was due to regular length lifters being used in a big m ...

CGI ( Compacted Graphite Iron) requires very specialized (and patented) castings process and the part must be designed for the material.
You're right it is lighter and stronger than grey cast iron that all our BB's use, but its going to take some serious $$$ to commercialize it for the comparatively small volumes left for BBC.

We have several styles to offer.
My favorite is the Livorsi SS:

I can do a bit better on price.
Or the CP Performance by Gil:

Have you done a leak down test???? Poor manifold vacuum can often be caused by a problem in the valve train.

I run a Crane 731 cam with EMI Thunders and the cast riser (short). It gave me a bit of trouble with reversion so I extended the inner with a sleeve. My thoughts are that anything that seeks to put more distance between where the exhaust mixes and the cylinders is a good thing, hence why dry exhausts are the best thing to combat reversion.
I can't see any issues with that set up. Where does ...

I rebuilt a pair of 575SC's last winter with about 300 hours or so. I planned on replacing the springs, upgrade to 10* Titanium retainers and 10* locks. The surprise was the valves were starting to tulip, so ended up replacing all the valves. Before Crane went out of business, ended up replacing all the rockers as well.

I am just starting to look at the same thing so I am very interested in how this thread develops. I am looking at the Whipple package. About $7k. Their website says it is a direct bolt on to the 502 Mag and good for about 600hp, ecm reprogramming included. I have don't know what other mods are necesssary like cam, rotating assembly, heads, exhaust, injection, or whatnot. Does anyone else? ...

on a broken vertical shaft, clutch shaft or propshaft.

I know on my Gaffrig/Livorsi's that I had, you could change the where the cable is connected to the shifter to increase or decrease the amount of throw. Not sure if you can do that with yours or not.

I am trying to understand this also. What is the difference between MEFI 1, 2, 3, 4, 4A, and 4B? Can you upgrade - answer seems to be 'you must upgrade both ecm and harness'. Is that right?...
